I am afraid I fall into the negative camp on this issue Steve. As a friend of mine commented many years ago about Social Media "No good will ever come out of it" What I don't understand is why anyone would want to make a video of their workshop, let alone why anyone would want to look at it. I avoid all SM like the plague and see it as inhabited by those with a weakness driven by vanity. What exactly does giving you a 'thumbs up' do? Does it link me to your SM network in some way that egregious organisations can make assumptions about my preferences? If people put up YooToob links I ignore them - I have probably only ever watched any YT content on a handful of occasions and found it all to be extremely sad. Far better to communicate by the written word on a forum such as this, to a known fraternity of like minded souls. Sorry if my views have offended, I must say however, that I do enjoy your contributions to this forum. Hi oily rag. I am not in any way offended by your comment. In fact i am delighted that there are people out there in such denial, that they think that txt is the way to go. Long live text. You are obviously in a minority of folk that thinks the world is after them. I am being watched an all etc etc. My video's & there will be many more to come are not for the likes of you. In fact you remind me of my Dad, I looked up to him & thought he was some sort of God. It was only after his demise that i realised he was actually a total plonker. I probably am too. But my youtube video's are not for people like you but for lots of guys & even gals that want to see this sort of thing. You are obviously a very educated individual that can learn nothing from anyone, because you are the Elite. Take care. P.S you do need to watch the video's i upload, because i think you would benefit from my logical way of doing things. Disclaimer . I love this forum & feel glad to be a member of it. P.S.S where would you ever see a father & Son do a road trip in a 600bhp Jaguar Ftype in txt. You have to broaden you horizon's. Video is the way to go. Remember Betamax & VHS. Sorry just messing. P.S.S.S For gods sake do not give me a thumbs up. It will take you to a place in oblivian. Or it will just give me some more positive feed back for my little channel. My vanity i am not sure of. Not sure what it means. Or does it mean look at me , i am great. If so then you are wrong. I have never thought i was great in any way. I am learning still at 69 years of age. Steve. ![]() 1078 forum posts | Youtube is fantastic as a portal into the lives of people doing remarkable things. I've found it very inspiring to see one gentleman experimenting with home made kinetic energy recovery on his pushbike, learned things from machinists half my age (but with twice my experience) and watched through my fingers as Keith Appleton uses an adjustable spanner on everything. During lockdown I think the ability to watch a variety of subjects of interest kept me sane... don't rule it out, you are missing out of a huge amount of information. Even if the modern subjects are not your thing, there are a lot of older films which have been uploaded, especially of interest items about Swindon works etc. |

![]() 910 forum posts 197 photos | A well known naughty that classic car owners have to watch out for when showing their vehicles at rallies etc. are trackers fixed to the vehicle. With all these battery powered tools hardened clamps, locks etc are no safeguard. Motorcycles even when bolted to a garage floor is no safeguard they have been stolen from what you might think was secure. My friend now no longer with us had an old Honda Six his workshop had a cartridge trip device on the door similar to what farmers use to warn them of thieves. Another anti burglary device which might be frowned on but after years of restoration you don't want your pride and joy stolen. His shot gun loaded with rock salt was connected to his Honda if moved ankles got peppered he told me I never go in the workshop when he has had a drink of beer. Was shown his leg when he forgot his rule.

Let herberts find out when it's too late.

I am afraid I fall into the negative camp on this issue Steve. ... ... You are obviously in a minority of folk that thinks the world is after them. I am being watched an all etc etc. ... Steve. Steve, can I remind you when Jon Lawes warned of the need to be vague about location, you replied: Thanks for that. But Leeds has over 3 million people, so pretty vague on my location. And less than an hour later, Jon posted: I've pinged you a message with your house number on ... it was a three minute search, ... Rather than Oily Rag being 'obviously in a minority of folk that thinks the world is after them', is it possible you're an innocent abroad on the Internet? I recommend taking the possibility seriously! Unfortunately, most security advice on the web is aimed at consumers: what ordinary users need to do to protect myself from publishers. Harder to find information about how publishers like Steve should protect themselves because publishers are expected to know what they're doing. They go on courses, recruit qualified staff, pay for consultancy, and buy secure hosting services. In contrast, retired gents doing a bit of amateur web publishing rarely have the background needed to do so in complete safety. I suggest some swotting is in order: Didn't take me long to find advice like: If you post videos to YouTube, there’s a lot to worry about: notably, privacy-invading content in your videos... Dave

I know its all subjective, but in my opinion, theres everything imaginable on U tube, and most of the time a lot better than TV. Historical, machining, welding, woodwork, battleships, railways, motorcycles, cars, just about anything you can think of !!!. |

That was from a picture i posted of my van & car. Showing the house No Not a address search. Oddly that picture was taken on my Son's driveway some time ago. Not sure who would go to the trouble of finding me just to rob my crown jewels. Even if they did it would be hard to even get in. Obviously i cannot divulge my security. For over 7 years i installed security equipment (residential). So it is pretty secure. So I will not frown upon comments of security , but will take heed & be careful not to show anything that would lead the wrong sort to my door. Thanks for the advice though. However i will not stop making the vids, it is something i enjoy doing. Steve. Edited By Steviegtr on 25/11/2021 16:46:43 |

The only reason I don't post my work is it's not very good and I take criticism a little too much to heart. It's a rather childish trait but I just can't seem to shake it off. |

I make a lot of mistakes, but finding a resolution is all part of the fun! After all, it's said we all learn from our mistakes - but it's so much more satisfying to learn from somebody else's, isn't it? John

1076 forum posts 129 photos | Engineering tools really aren't what burglars want round my way; they want digital devices, jewellery, cash and vehicles - things they understand and they can easily take off with. Three of my four closest neighbours have been burgled during the daytime in the last ten years, and my immediate neighbour with an Audi was car-jacked twice on his driveway. Burglars also tend to target houses where the security is visibly less good than that of neighbouring houses - keys left in lock inside back door, no alarm, no bars on windows or spikes on side gate/fences, windows left open, iPads left charging on kitchen worktops etc. Bewilderingly, nearly all my neighbours have exterior lights but turn these off when they go to bed. This is when the lights should be going on. On top of good security, the two best things you can do are to never go out and never go to sleep. Sounds silly, but at ours there is practically always someone in and always someone awake with lights on in living areas, i.e. not just the hallway or landing. It's one of the dubious benefits of living in a dementia-dominated household. I've probably saved my neighbours more than one night-time burglary. |

![]() 2668 forum posts 352 photos | Well i have posted a Part 2 of show us your workshop. Unfortunately it is actually a Prequel to showing my milling machine with warts an all etc. Which will be coming soon. It is a video i made some time ago & never published it. So here it is. For the members who do not have a powered x axis drive on their milling machine & cannot afford the ridiculous prices for one. I made my own. It cost very little & has not let me down in over a years use. Sometimes driving fly cutters & even the 60mm , 6 insert face mill. Some members said the gears would not last, especially if driving it in reverse. It did & still does work perfectly. For anyone who already has a posh x axis power drive this video will be no use whatsoever to them. However anyone even thinking of the possibility of having one, then please give it a watch. Kind regards from a nearly seasoned member, who has learned a lot from this Forum & it's members who have helped me so much in the past. One thing learned from previous comments was I nearly showed a part I bought with my Name & address on it. If you think it is rubbish then please tell me. I can take constructed comments as well as good ones. Unfortunately it was in the early days of doing video & the camera was handheld. Which i try not to do now. |
