Win 10 back t0 Win 7

As of last month Linux market share is 2.4% according to this. I get the impression from others that it’s not well supported with third party software.

Well, what does 'market share' mean? If it's anything to do with the amount of money paid to buy or rent an operating system, it's not surprising that Linux is at the bottom - it's free!

Not necessarily as there are paid for versions of Linux where the software is bought with support as a package.

Yes, good point! I hope the fact that Linux is free isn't being disputed. I believe that some businesses buy a Linux OS + support package. I think Suse offered that. The OS is free, the support isn't. Perhaps that's the explanation.

I'm lost now, I dont want a steep learning curve from Linux, just a PC that works for me.

Most statistics are wrong! Often overlooked is that Linux runs many of the electrical gadgets we take for granted such as - Mobile phones (Android is Linux based), washing machines, internet connected fridges, toasters, TV's, doorbells, tablets and of course Apple's operating system is Unix based which is what Linux is!

Me too. Take the machine out of the box it came in, turn it and start typing/drawing/playing music/whatever. I have absolutely no interest in how it works, or that being able to replace a thingywotsit with one I wrote myself might make it unnoticeably faster

Indeed, are you plugging the camera in via a USB port, or using the card in a separate reader.
If the latter is it an external reader of one built into the PC.
I've had issues with poor quality USB leads.

From what I've read, and I'm no expert, the camera should just be seen as a mass storage device, the same as plugging in an external hard drive.

What's the actual issue, as it might not be directly W10 related?

I rarely use a desktop machine any more since buying my first iPad. I’m now on number three. For most of my computing needs it just works, email, surfing the net, typing letters, editing photos. In fact the built in camera and editing software alone has saved me hours of fiddling about with a camera. I still have a MILC for serious stuff but snaps for online use are so easy with an iPad. Virtually the only time I use a desktop these days is for drawing on my iMac. I’ve wasted far too much time in the past fiddling with Microsoft issues.

I own a Panasonic camera and I no longer plug the camera into my laptop it's hard work compared with popping the SD card out and popping it into a card reader

One of the first things that a friend said about W10 was that he could not load his older pictures.

Images from my now elderly TZ50 load to W7 without a problem, (Until a few days ago, during some copying, Bands starting appearing across the bottom of the recorded image ).

Clive, you will be leased to know that I bought the TZ50 because of the Leitz lens. A superb piece of optics!

(Too tight to spend the extra £90 to get the red dot! )

Maybe I released the shutter release too soon,,before writing was complete, because repeating the exercise, on the same memory card, worked perfectly!

But Clive's experience sounds another knell for W10 to my mind.

Howard - can I suggest you reformat your card in the camera (if you haven't done it for a while) as those black bars sound very much like what happened to a friend - they lost most of the photos from a trip to China because of it. Apparently, clearing the card just by deleting the photos is a bad idea.

Never really thought about this before but why should a camera need its own special driver? Why wouldn't the camera manufacturer set it up to look (to the OS) like a card reader with a card in it? No additional drivers necessary and protection from OS changes. **

Or perhaps they do .... I've never tried the camera connection on any of my cameras over the years so I wouldn't know. Easier to just use the card in a reader.

Windows 10 & never really had a problem. I have 5 different camera's. All the memory cards read ok. Check the fat 32 issue though. As said above it is probably a problem with the user. That is is usually the case with me.
