Interesting translation of "out of sight, out of mind" = blind idiot

I've just spent various period over the last week or so watching my 81 year old neighbour re-build his rockery at the top, sloping part of a long garden carrying all the rocks by hand from the front of the house a good 50 yds. I'm ashamed to say I felt worn out just watching him.

As a break, he puts on his lyrca kit and goes a 20 mile cycle ride. He's always been a cyclist and seems to think nothing of lengthy trips come rain or shine - so there must some be something in it re fitness?

PS loved the original post - always nice to have a chuckle.

Seems I'm guilty of the crimes here, I cycle and wear lycra! I always thought that me wearing lycra was a treat for the ladies, apparently its not, so the ladies in my life tell me. I also spend far too much on that particular hobby.

I'll start smoking, if it is to be believed there is a net gain to the NHS from smoking tax.

Ps, I like runner beans, a marvelous crop this year.

Runner beans need picking again it seems every other day I am picking, also picked rhubarb, peas, cucumbers. tomatoes gooseberries red, white and black currents along with raspberries. soon the sweetcorn will be ready the leaks and parsnips still growing and yes forgot the carrots. Grapes and blue berries seem to have failed this year.

Now back to preparing the ground for the new workshop which arrives next week followed by the lathe and mill in mid September

There was an advertisement in the 1920s for the Austin 7 that claimed that the total running costs of that car was less than 1 d. per mile and that it was less than the cost of walking and replacing worn out shoes. Perhaps we should all drive rather than walking to the shops to save the planet????

And I have a vast surplus of blueberries and had lots of all the berries except grapes - very late season here - smaller than those silver balls they put of fairy cakes at the mo'. It's tree fruit that's done poorly as a result of late frosts.

If you leave beans on the plant to grow into the seed state, the plant seems to stop producing new pods. I think if the beans are broken away leaving a piece on the plant they also give up, ‘thinking’ they have produced seed for the next season.

Runner bean trivia. The edible flowers can be used as colour in salads. In the northern USA the beans are often grown as a substitute for Lima beans (butter beans) in recipes. In the States where Lima beans are easily grown, then Runner beans tend to be grown as an ornamental plant. Historically, Central American natives grew the plant as a root vegetable. It is also possible to lift the roots and store over winter for replanting. Admittedly the roots look a bit thin for use as a root veg when grown UK.
