Thread: Amazon delivery scam? |
19/08/2022 10:45:04 |
Anyone had this scam? I ordered some indexable milling cutters from Amazon, they came from China, the price included postage (free), we got a text message asking for payment for import duties! I decided to ignor it as I'm not providing payment details via a mobile phone number. Surprise surprise the cutters arrived anyway. Just thought I'd post this to alert others, companies involved were Amazon, CNE and Hermes, not saying they were the scammers, but someone working for them may be. Buyer beware! Regards David |
Thread: Touch DRO |
06/08/2022 14:20:08 |
Does anyone have any recent experiance of the Touch DRO interface (good or bad)? I am considering going in that direction after the demise of a second "iguaging" style readout module. The alternative is to start again with a conventional three axis DRO. David

As far as reviews are concerned, I tend to go for a concensus of opinions. I accept that my final choice is influenced by my own bias! Regards Dave J

Thread: Imperial Brass Strip |
21/04/2022 13:38:44 |
Ok, hands up, full disclosure, I messed up making the beam linkage on the Elmers 24 engine, drilling that 1/8 by 1/32 strip was my undoing! Does anyone know where I can get some replacements. Looking to get 12" or more (to allow for more learning oppurtunities!) Regards Dave Jenner |
Thread: FAULTY DRILL BITS ! |
19/03/2022 11:54:36 |
I bought these from DW Toolshop in Ireland. Presto 55 Piece HSCo DIN338 Drill Bit Set 1.0mm - 13.0mm X 0.5 + Tapping SizesThey work fine. Many years ago I bought a set of cobolt drills from Harbour Freight, all imperial sizes including number and letter drills, these have also been very good. I once bought a small set of drills for an emergency repair on holiday (Rolson) without a doubt the worst drills I have ever used! They would catch then unwind the flutes! Regards Dave

Thread: Is this distasteful |
10/03/2022 08:25:04 |
Interested in the comment " In fact the possesion of blank rounds, empty caes and projectiles are illegal as these can be re-purposed and re-used. I recommend the thread is dropped. " Its been a while since I perused the firearms act but could anyone direct me to the paragraph concerning empty cases and projectiles? Also, from memory, blank rounds did not need a firearms certificate to hold or purchase when I had my certificate. Dave |
Thread: Metrotropolitan Vicker Single phase motor |

One thing we do not know is what the external control gear consists of. Possibly some form of variable voltage input via a variable resistance? Interesting. Looking forward to the tale as it unfolds! Dave J |
Thread: Windows 10 "upgrade" to Windows 11 Anyone tried it? |
04/12/2021 14:12:17 |
It's reassuring to hear that there are few if any serious issues to sort out. Thankyou for the feedback so far, its looking good! Regards Dave J

Diogenes II, no there is nothing specific. In general i'm in favour of running the latest software, just need to be aware of any negative issues before I take the plunge and her ladyship does likewise. It'll be all my fault if anything does'nt work! |

In the latest updates on my laptop is an invitation to upgrade to Windows 11, has anyone done it yet. I'd be interested to hear what peoples experiance has been. In truth I am a bit nervous about doing it. |
Thread: New Micrometers |
03/12/2021 15:23:07 |
All bar one of my micrometers, a Dasqua 0-25mm, are second hand Moore and Wright brand, one belonged to my father, so probably getting on for 70 years old (or more?) they all work fine all day every day. I had one digital 0-25 (0-1" Concerning my dads mic, still spot on accurate, smooth to operate but the graduations are quite faint now, anyone know of a way to improve these. Thread: Perfect Stainless |
03/12/2021 14:49:14 |
Stainless Steel comes in many forms 304, 316 ect. they are all "Resistant" to corrosion but not stain proof. Many industries make use of these steel types, a tour around a Pressurised Water Reactor power station wiil show a huge amount stainless in use, from small pipe fittings to pumpcasings and impellors. Can be interesting to machine! |
Thread: Myford ML7 Clutch issues |
28/11/2021 11:57:57 |
My clutch has recently started to drag when in the dis-engaged position. Its the expanding drum brake type. I've tried adjustments and relocating the actuating arm, this did not have the desired effect. On inspection I've noted the following potential issues: The plate where the brake (clutch) shoes locate has play at the actuating cam and at its bore where it fits to the shaft, the two grub screws therefore cuase it to be off set from the true center. the actuting cam has both lateral and axial play over and above what would be requred for running clearance. Also I'm not sure what the minimum friction material thickness should be. I've also seen that the lever tilts when rotated by the pushrod. Which of these issues whould contribute most to the dragging? If I cure the dragging by adjustment there is little driving force available at the chuck! Is it a case of its too far gone to remedy ? Regards Dave |

Thread: Decent hacksaw blades |
15/11/2021 09:31:41 |
I can only speak from experiance, the three packs I bought from RDG last well, about the same as the Starrett ones. I cannot quantify that obviously! Dave
|
15/11/2021 08:31:28 |
I've used a variety of brands, but I cannot see the difference in performance between Eclipse brand and Starrett. Check the RDG tools "Eclipse Section". However donot buy any of the unbranded blades on the wider marketplace, unless you like chaging blades frequently!!

Thread: Any Old Gun Experts out there? |
06/11/2021 14:36:35 |
The spike is for clearing the touch hole possibly for a flintlock, but could be for percussion. The other attachment is to extraxt either a stuck lead ball or the wadding. The screwdriver needs no explanation! The square recess is possibly to remove the flint, but some early percussion nipples may have a square to allow removal from the action. It is not uncommon to have gun multi tools, saves stuff going missing in the field. One old pistol I had was completly strippable using the tools incorporated in its design. Pressing a sprung button allowed the cylinder pivot to be removed which had a srewdriver to remove the grips. Once these were removed, a lever was rotated to release the hammer mainspring, thus allowing te remaining components to be disassembled. Soldiers loose tools in battle, so having it all built in makes good sense. |
Thread: Myford ml7 "parting off"and "max working size" |
22/10/2021 21:20:07 |
One other consideration is that the rear tool posts attach to the cross slide, thereby eliminating the compound slide from the equation, sorry I forgot to mention that in my previous post. |
22/10/2021 17:25:54 |
One other factor to consider is that during parting off, becuse of the forces involved (relativly wide cuting surface) tend to cause the work to want to climb on to the top of the tool, any spindle wear will add to this. I suspect that rear tool posts do the opposite as the tool is inverted the forces now want to pull the spindle down.

Hemingway Kits do an interesting between centers bar, see link http://www.hemingwaykits.com/acatalog/_Tidy__Between_Centres_Boring_Bar.html Seems to address the adjustment issue. Andrew Whale did a video on building them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJLutnbVVHw Hope that is of some interest David
