Specsavers are a franchise, so what one branch will do may not be the same as another.

Try another SS outlet.

I'm amazed at the costs you guys are talking about for these things in the UK. I thought it was bad here in Canada but perhaps I should be considering myself fortunate.

My behind-the-ear Unitron was priced at ~$2000 CDN less a Government kickback which brought it down to ~$1500 CDN. (I did also buy a Bluetooth remote controller/audio-streamer on top of that). I gather from the (admittedly sometimes questionable) information on the Internet that they are made in China for around $70.

That said, in the approaching two years since I got it, the audiologist has provided all supplies (domes, wax-stops, batteries both regular and rechargeable) free of charge and shows no sign of stopping. He also indicated that if I lost or badly damaged it, it would be replaced free of charge (presumably there's a time limit).

Further.

A quick Google leads to a lively community of home programming of Widex aids.

Indeed, Google 'hack hearing aids'...

This place say they will reprogram any hearing aid for a £140 consultation.

I have no experience of their service...

I would highly recommend Tripp hearing, not used them for the subject in question though.

Not hearing but vision. My workshop spectacles have wrap around my ears side frames, the type grandad had years ago, the frames themselves are very old. The lenses are bi focal and according to my recement eye test need replacing. Does anyone know of a company who will carryout the change for me. I do know how simple it is to ground lenses on the small grinding machine. Not one local optician will even consider the job. John

Paul Rhodes,

When my father died, and I tried to get rid of his NHS walking sticks, I simply took them to the reception of the local hospital and left them with them, saying, in effect, "Yours, I believe", followed by walking out. It thus became their problem.

Optical spectacle lenes are big business, the larger optical grinding companies grind a series of lenses in all powers and strengths and these are delivered in a, 'Round' shape and the optition will grind them to the patients requirements. A one off job does not pay and sadly they look at you, the payee as a goldmine.

Of interest the round lenses are costed at about £1.00 but when worked, zoom up to £300-£500 depending on what spec. you want or need.

In reality best to buy a new pair to suit your requirements.

Ok Clive, when I was in India and Turkey it was an easy job to get the lenses changed and you got a glass of tea whilst you were waiting. I've seen the round lenses, as the optician was sort of proud to show off the process and his little German made grinder. I like the frames as I can look under the car bonnet and not have the glasses slide off. Incidentally was you REME ? John

Hi All,

The plot thickens!

It would seem so far that there is no real impediment to getting previously owned hearing aids reprogrammed apart from any types that are moulded one offs inside the ear where there MIGHT be bacteriological contamination issues.

The aids that I have been given are by SIVANTOS and it would seem that private audiologists have access to the required programming software.

EXCEPT the version that SS uses is apparently "tweaked" to allow only SS to access it.....

Cannot imagine why they would do that can you....?

My investigations continue apace....

Martin
