Thread: Making a polygon lathe cutting mechanism
27/12/2022 00:34:50

I spotted the same video, via Facebook, a day or two ago.

I can remember seeing something very similar many years ago on TV; it might have been Tomorrows World.
That one had the rotating cutting tool behind the headstock on a separate parallel spindle, and was shown cutting hex heads.
Anyone else recall that?

Thread: BEEP command not workring on a vintage 486 desktop W97 PC
24/12/2022 18:35:53
Posted by Ady1 on 24/12/2022 18:15:57:

The beep bit used to be on the motherboard and could be set and heard during the boot sequence

If your board doesn't beep during the boot sequence then that's a starting point

i.e. the startup beep may be switched off

the beeps were used for highlighting boot up errors, 2,3,4,etc told you where a problem was

autoexec.bat

config.sys

(omg...about a million years ago now)

Edited By Ady1 on 24/12/2022 18:23:21

It might be before that, and need accessing the BIOS; different hardware has different commands, but it might come up on screen during POST (Power On Self Test) F2 was certainly used, as was F9 and DEL, though confusingly some of the same Function buttons were also used for safe boot on different machines.
This of course assumes the beeper is actually fitted, so mk1 eyeball for that.

Try accessing the BIOS and see if Beeps are turned off.

Robert - I have never detected any sounds at all on power up. Perhaps I need to look at the internal wiring on the screen which is where the speakers are located.

Is this a laptop/portable with an integrated screen, or a desktop/tower with a separate VGA screen?

If the former, there may be a stored key/function command to disable sounds; That's fooled me in the past.

If a tower, the beeper might be a separate small piezo electric sounder in the base unit, not a speaker, plugged directly into the motherboard; a couple of my 486 towers had that arrangement. I think one was directly on the mobo, and another on wired header.

Is the sounder/speaker showing up OK on device manager?
You could try re-installing, or uninstall/re-install from there.

Can you get any sounds out of the machine by other means?

Thread: Confused by a magnet

A quick check with my trusty Silva Compass [not a patch on Nick’s but it does fit nicely in the camera-bag] reveals that the bottom of the magnet, and thereby the whole of the pot, is a North pole.

MichaelG.

.

That tallies with what I found on my simple countersunk one.
The side with the countersink was south

Indeed, Martin … and I would take the distinction a little further; in that this [on p25] is what I would consider ‘potted’ in the sense of being embedded in resin:

.

The problem I have with Eclipse is that they don’t appear to explicitly tell us what they mean.

[ memories of Humpty Dumpty ]

MichaelG.

As I read this, the difference is that this type above is described as BiPole pot; note that it is a brass case which won't form part of the magnetic circuit.; it's a button magnet in a brass pot, rather than a disc magnet in a steel/iron pot.
Half of the front face will be North, with the other half South poles, just like a button or horseshoe magnet.

This means that in one position, two magnets will be strongly attracted to each other, whereas if you twist one by 180° along the axis, they will repel each other. You could maybe use them for holding a door closed, but force it open when the handle is rotated 180°, (as well as its conventional use against a steel plate etc.)

I suspect potted magnets with an iron/steel pot have south in the centre, with north concentrically in the outer of the pot.
i.e. they are conventional disk magnets with the pot to complete the circuit and bring both poles to the front, but concentrically.

It could of course be the opposite polarity, depending on the maker/purpose.

I've just been out for a quick play in the workshop.
My countersunk, non-potted magnets have the south pole on the countersunk side, as evidenced by deflection of a conventional magnetic compass; this is just like a disc magnet

A magnetic car aerial base is effectively a larger potted magnet, with an air rather than resin/brass gap, which in the case of the two I tried had South in the middle, and North concentrically around the outside in the steel casing.

It's not helped that many sellers on eBay etc describe their disc/flat magnets, featuring one pole each side/end, as "Button" magnets, which should really present both poles on one face. (as per Page 11)

Addendum
After another workshop trip, this time with a small cylindrical magnet and an ex computer hard drive magnet.
The cylindrical one is really just like a very thick disc magnet, north pole on one flat end, south on the other.
The HDD magnet, whilst thin and flat is quite different to a round disk magnet.
It's a thin kidney shape, but in this case one lobe of the kidney is north and the other south, so not aligned front to back, but end to end.

Mind your fingers if you're playing with these, they bite particularly if you have a pair.
I was holding a small cylindrical magnet against the kidney shaped HDD one looking for attraction/repulsion, but the steel pliers were quite strongly attracted to the bigger magnet.
That attraction was greater than the much smaller cylinder, such that when I released my grip on the pliers a bit, the little one shot out of the jaws, and across the full length of the garage; still not found it yet.

Michael

I don't think that this magnet is a potted variety. The magnetic material has been formed with a stepped rim to allow it to make a more effective contact with uneven surfaces and give clearance should the fixing screw head be slightly proud of the countersunk hole. […]

.

Agreed

MichaelG.

Well, they are described as a "Shallow Pot" (with countersunk hole) on P 19 of the Eclipse catalogue, so I hope that's what you receive.
P17 lists plain "Neodymium Rings" (with a countersunk hole), which I assume to be the plain unpotted ones.I have some of the latter from a different source, but have found the holes to be a bit too shallow for most countersunk screws.
It looks to me as though the coloured pots at the foot of P19 are just as described; i.e. coloured pots containing a zinc plated countersunk button magnet.

Michael;
Looks like we were typing at the same time, your post wasn't there when I started typing mine, but i got disturbed by a coffee part way through.

Myford contracted out the making of their QCTP to a fellow in the west country, they had a W stamped on them. I met him and bought some Myford parts a while ago ! This was when Myford were still ar Beeston. There MAY have been other contractors doing this work as well. Noel.

Edited By noel shelley on 19/12/2022 11:40:56

He/AR-Precision produced them again briefly for a while more recently; I bought some off him 3 or 4 years ago.

Unfortunately, they were a loose fit on both my pattern/copy toolposts, as the web which engages on the piston/drawbolt was thinner, so the eccentric went past the maximum camming point; other angles and sizes were OK.
I couldn't really ask for a refund, as my toolpost wasn't original Myford, but he did send me a couple of different drawbolts, with the cross hole in a different place, so I am able to use them.
I have them set up on one face of the toolpost only, and use them for boring bars etc.

I borrowed a genuine Dickson toolholder from a friend of mine, which is a perfect fit on my (Indian??) toolpost(s), and I have also bought a variety of other holders, including the extended ones, which also fit fine; (Wilmot or Piddington, can't remember which now.

I looked up the magnets on the Zoro website. It describes the plating system and the reason why they are plated. Namely to protect against corrosion.

So did I, Andrew … my question was why there was a can around something which is commonly supplied ‘naked’ but plated.

Re Corrosion, see P92 of the eclipse Magnets & Magnetic Tools catalogue available for download from HERE
https://www.eclipsemagnetics.com/resources/?filter_related_product_type=2403&filter_resource_type=2398#resources

A very useful source of larger flat magnets, attached to a backing plate is redundant computer hard disk drives; there's two in each single platter drive.

Thanks for the website info, SOD, it would be safer to buy on their ebay shop, probably, then.

I have bought from Lathes UK in the past.

Re the web site; last I heard, directly from Jenny, it is completely defunct and shouldn't be showing any shopping options.
I'm told it was maintained by Jenny's son(s), who might also have been involved in supplying/making some of the tooling, but they have now taken a different direction work wise.
The Ebay shop is fine, and I'm sure the phone numbers are OK; I think Jenny also still has a presence at some exhibitions/shows.

JB tools web site is out but you can order by phone. I ordered some last week and they arrived in a couple of days despite the postal strike. Jenny's phone number is 078750757523 or 012460418110 Loverly to deal with.

Jenny also has an eBay shop

Thread: re-use of gas springs
10/12/2022 23:49:33

They are regularly used as a tensioner, rather than a coil spring, by folks who are building belt grinders.
The machines are often used for knifemaking and frequently feature a 2"x72" belt.

If I'm re-using something similar, normally a car shock absorber/damper, I just cut into the outer cylinder with a hacksaw, which releases the pressurised gas in a reasonably controlled manner.
Just keep it pointing downwards and cut the uphill bit, to save getting showered in the oily contents.

As an aside, if you ever get involved in dealing with a car fire, keep out of the line of fire behind the car, as I'm informed, by those who practice this stuff professionally, that they can explode and shoot out the ram like a crossbow bolt.

Thread: Another EVRI calamity.
10/12/2022 23:32:17

As I've mentioned elsewhere, my own local EVRI delivery agent is excellent, the company overall less so, but we now live in Buxton; a smallish town where lots of folk know each other.
Prior to that i lived in Sheffield and am sill on a few of the community internet groups from there.
I spotted this earlier this afternoon;

"Are people still having issues with Evri? Had something stuck at the depot since last Friday. Complained to the supplier and the next afternoon a guy is poking about in the front garden....claims to be the courier looking for the missing parcel he says he left under a tree in the front garden "five or six days ago".

Tracking says parcel has never left the local depot...."

Thread: Frost warning
10/12/2022 21:39:04

I had my hot water hand wash heater burst/leak last year; think a smaller version of an electric shower.
Fortunately, it blew the head off a self tapper, rather than splitting the plastic, so I was able to drill it out with a carbide bit on the high speed Meddings, and re-tap for some threaded rod.
I think that was probably caused by freezing water expanding.
I've just been out to that workshop, turned off the water feed, opened the adjacent cold hose pipe tap and the hand washer taps, and blown the standing water through by lung pressure.

You can see in the photo, the missing screw head and the gasket blown out.

Bust a Gasket.
