Thread: Pocketmags withdraw Windows 7 and 8.0 Support
05/06/2017 08:51:46

Neil

In my case, I did nothing, one weeked it worked the next week it did not.

The only change was that Windows 7 had loaded the latest security update, so I assume that this broke it.

The issue seen is that when the offline reader loads instead of seeing the covers of the magazines I just see a grey screen, with the usual dropdowns at the top.

Thanks for looking into this.

I think about 150 is the most anyone could have, I have ME from when Pocketmags was first used by MTM and there are 99 mags there, so add about 50 MEWs and thats hardly 100s.

If you change machine, the old one goes bang or you want to view the mags on another device then you will have to download them again. So unless anyone intends to use one machine for the rest of their life that won't go wrong its a fact that you are going to have to download all your mags every so often.

Jason,

If you know what you are doing, you can copy them to another PC, I have successfully done it with no issues.

It's not the fact that I have to re-download them that is the problem .... Under Windows 7 currently you cannot read anything you have downloaded nor can you re-download old issues or download new issues.

Neil,

Many thanks for looking into this ... I have 100's of issues of ME and MEW on my Laptop's Hard Disk which currently are useless. As I initially stated I do a lot of travelling and therefore do not have access to the internet all the time so rely on the offline copy. (i.e. on a trans-Atlantic flight!)

If you remember back ... One of MyTimeMedia's big selling points when they had a large increase in digital subscription rates was OFFLINE access for life.

Since I purchased my subscription from MyTimeMedia they have the legal responsibility to supply this service, not PocketMags. MyTimeMedia subcontracted the service but my contract is with MyTimeMedia.

I will wait and see what happens next week.

Hi,

My Pocketmags offline reader has just stopped working, it will no longer display the covers of any magazine that I have downloaded, therefore I can't read them.

I am running the latest version of Windows 7.

I reported this to Pocketmags and their response is below. (If this is not resolved I will be terminating all my digital subscriptions as I do a lot of travelling where I have no access to the Internet, so I rely on the offline reader.

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulties!

Unfortunately, the offline reader has had a number of issues with recent Windows updates, and so at present we have removed the support, because of the problems inherent in maintaining it across so many versions, which only cause more frustration for the reader.

If you have Windows 8.1 or 10 on your computer, you can download the Pocketmags app, which allows offline reading and works perfectly. In addition, there are Pocketmags apps available for most mobile and tablet devices if you have one.

Therefore I think this needs to be addressed by MTM

Why not leave it where it is and sell it as a feature of the house?

There are a couple of images in the Station Road Steam archive ... It looks as if they are on the outside, so the head of the rivet is on the outside.

Bob,

If you get no joy from your email requesting your deposit back, I would write to them (By recorded/Signed for).

How did you pay your deposit? (Cheque or Credit/Debit Card etc.)

Hi,

Take a look in the Blackgates catalogue, the last 4 or so pages gives the details of the wheels they sell. (It also contains details of all the loco's that they provide parts for)

You can download the catalogue off their web site.

Following the Paul jervis link to a Swiss company. Having triggered BREXIT can we now order VATfree from that source as a non EEC country??????

Even if it was shipped Tax free .... The UK customs would intercept it and charge you 20% VAT + a handling fee + maybe Import duty. It would be treated as if you ordered from the US or anyother non EU country. So you could end up paying more!

25/01/2017 00:43:49

That depends who your ISP is and what package you are on .... I have a fixed IP Address when connecting from home, so logging out and in again will make no difference as I will always have the same address.

In theory, 200W should be more than adequate for what was a battery powered hand drill.

[at least, all the ones I've seen]

But you may find that the peak 'inrush current' is upsetting the PSU ... hence the recommendation to use a car battery.

MichaelG.

I have looked at one of my 200W PC Power supplies .... from the label -

5v @ 18Amps, 12v @ 6A, 3.3v @ 10A

Is 6Amps at 12v (72 Watts) enough to start and run a drill??

Hello John,

Glad you got sorted, I haven't heard back from the technical people yet, but I'm assuming that this problem was affecting you and Graeme as no-one else seems to have reported the problem.

@Graeme - are you now able to see issue 250? If not have you contacted Pocketmags support?

Neil

Hi,

I also have a Pocketmags problem .... The latest issues of Model Engineer (4551) & Model Engineer Workshop (Jan-17) are not available to download as part of my subscriptions .... I have tried through the offline reader, IPAD app and via the website to download/read them but the only option given is to buy them!

+1 on Spareys "The Amateurs Lathe", less than a fiver too

Hi Ady

Under a fiver, did you buy that recently?. The cheapest I could find was click and collect at W H Smiths £6.26.

Steve

Currently there are a couple on Ebay (Buy it Now) for £2.79 inc UK Postage

Thread: Downloading Digital Issue
29/10/2016 08:24:39

If you have downloaded the files, using the offline reader I do not need to be connected to the internet to read the magazines. (I use Windows 7 and a iPad)

Also I do not need to sign into Microsoft either. (This may be needed if you are using the app (Win 10) and not the program.)
