Thread: lathe turning taper toward headstock
31/12/2013 19:04:16

Hi Mike,

As Nobby says, has anything been done to the lathe? A wooden stand will not be as stable as a steel stand, what kind of stand do you have? Have you read Harold Hall's description on Lathe setup, turning paralell etc.?

Hi Simon,

Welcome to the forum. Have you checked out Tony's site? He also seems to be interested to hear from owners of Faircut lathes.

Hi Otley,

no need to dye the component, your method should work. I have anodized without using any dye and it worked.

Thread: Units of measure in Gear cutting
16/12/2013 05:06:27

Hi Dave,

if you should want to make metric gears - using the module system - you have to multiply the numbers with the module and the result will be in mm. I have made module cutters using John Stevenson's table and description. Here's another description.

Thread: turning tapers
09/12/2013 14:03:02

Hi Geoff,

when I turn short tapers I first clamp the chuck in the 4-jaw and center it, then put a Dial Test Indicator on the topslide and adjust until I can move the topslide without the indicator moving. Then mount the work and turn using the topslide. Don't finish turn, but test first by bluing.

Hi Gray, My friend with a C6B would also be interested in a version of your screwcutting clutch for this lathe.

Thread: Which mill
05/12/2013 05:42:48

Hi Mark,

which milling machine depends on what you want to make. There isn't that much difference between the two milling machines you mention. The XJ12 has MT3 taper in the spindle, so if you have MT 3 tooling already that may save you some money.

My experience is that it is a heavier milling machine is better, so if you can afford something like the Amadeal XJ25 you get a machine that is twice as heavy. I have a very similar machine (different paint and slightly different motor cover) and are very satisfied.

Nice looking grinder Stewart, and as said very simple to make. I too use a small milling table and grinding wheels on an Emco Unimat to grind my blunt slot drills.

Ady, seems the Enfield Thunderbolt was ahead of its time, many electric car companies has gone "belly up", also "our" Think.

Muzzer, interesting post, looks very nice. I too need something like this, unfortunately my chucks or lathes don't use the Camlock system so mine would have to be different.

Thread: Inverter
16/11/2013 17:39:34

Hi Paul,

I haven't tried overheating the motor to see if the inverter shuts it down. But I had a small accident that stalled the lathe, and the inverter immediately shut off the supply to the motor so no harm was done.

Russel, I do as you do, feel the case temperature by hand and if I feel the motor is getting hot, either shut it down or let it run at high speed (without load).

Thread: WARCO WM-250 lathe family and WM16 mill - 001
02/11/2013 05:45:41

Hi Rik,

sorry to hear about your QCTP troubles. When the QCTP block is clamped to the top slide, it shouldn't rotate of course. Seems to me that you have to return this QCTP too.

I made my own tool post for my new 290F lathe, after G. Carlson's ideas, they work well and I have not had any problem with them rotating. Since I got the steel for the tool holders for free my only expense has been some allen screws. I have to remove the clamping handle though to exchange tool holders.

Thread: acid
01/11/2013 17:42:55

Hi David,

Try and get some benzoic acid and put that into the citric acid container. Benzioc acid will reduce/stop the growth if microorganisms. As Martin says, use a lightproof bottle.

I like your "piggy backed" bed stop solution, it's on my "to do" list.
