Thread: Turning Cartwheels
16/05/2021 10:49:45

Folks,

Excited by the springing into life of my Farm Boy engine, I'm minded to make a cart for it to sit on and rock gently back and forth when it's running.

I've been intrigued by the construction of this type of wheel (grabbed from the web)

cart wheel.jpg

The spokes and rim appears to be made from two adjacent strips of metal shaped like a Dairylea cheese triangle with a tyre fastened on with rivets.

I've seen them about at engine and agricultural shows in the UK but have not seen them on any videos of farm machinery in the US

Does anybody know if these were peculiar to any particular manufacturer?

Cheers,

Rod

Beryllium copper is used for non-ferrous springs.

.

Not arguing, Clive [you are obviously correct] ... but I'm interested to know if there is any useful advantage [except for its high electrical conductivity] over phosphor bronze.

MichaelG.

Perhaps the greatest advantage of BeCu is that it can be formed in the annealed state and then heat treated at about 320C to develop the spring properties.

Regarding the hazards of BeCu, this is from a hazard data sheet:

Non-hazardous operations
General handling, stamping and forming, many machining operations, medium temperature
hardening heat treatments, cleaning, plating, soldering and general assembly and disassembly
operations are considered safe and do not require specific controls other than general levels of
ventilation.

It goes on to state that certain grinding operations producing dust in a certain size range can cause a reaction in some sensitised operators.

Had the first run of my air cooled Farm Boy hit and miss engine. I've never had a an engine that is so easy to start first time - I reckon that's down to the elastomer piston ring giving good compression from the off

There is no rule about how firms present their prices to the customer.

I don't believe that to be the case. In th UK retail prices have to be shown VAT inclusive. Companies that sell to both the general public and to the trade tend to show both prices. Screwfix, for example, have a button to show VAT or not.

Thread: Workshop and Drilling holes with an ER collet chuck

I always drill with the er25 chuck in the mill. Takes up less headroom than a drill chuck and changing the collet is less hassle than extracting a 2mt and drawbar. For really small holes I use one of arc's micro drill adaptors in a half inch collet.

Probably a dodgy algorithm, spotting some match undetectable to human ears. It'll be done automatically, probably by the record label. Welcome to the future...

My thoughts exactly. I "shazamed" my video but it failed to identify any music...

27/04/2021 14:54:31

This might amuse you. A German speed metal band called "Rage" has claimed that the soundtrack on my YouTube video showing the action of a Eureka form relieving device has infringed their musical copyright. Apparently the "music" to be heard between 1:16 and 2.18 minutes was composed by them. What do you think?

After I challenged their claim they still maintain that their copyright has been infringed !

May I offer this from a 1939 Tom Senior catalogue (Liversedge not Liverpool)?

As they say, make sure you are sitting down before checking the price!

I remember my mum telling me that when she worked in the office of the local electricity company in Brighton just befor the war that the sevice engineers where paid £2 a week. So, one weeks salary for a working man to buy the castings and half a crown left over for beer at tuppence a pint.

21/04/2021 15:32:47

One advantage of carbon steel taps over HSS is that they it can be softened by heating up the whole thing to say 400C (hotter than "blue" but not as hot as "cherry red" . The offending tap can then be drilled out.

Having said that, I have great confidence in spiral flute taps which I now use confidently down to M2. The evacuation of the swarf makes them much less likely to sieze

Try a search for Comsol. Most of the Model Engineering suppliers in the UK stock it as well as CuP alloys who stock their own version in both cored and solid.

Thread: Simple test to distinguish mild steel rod from silver steel rod.
16/04/2021 11:45:50

The spark test does work - best tested by comparing with 2 known specimens. Measurement is pretty good as well since most mild steel bars are a couple of thou under the nominal diameter whereas silver steel is usually less than half a thou under.

Duncan,

Very nice. I shall look forward seeing the results of your flagstone fabrication. When I finish my Farm Boy, the next project will be the Sanderson Beam engine - it's going to need a floor.

I've spent the last couple of afternoons making this Instrument Vice. The base casting is a CES product that has been hanging around (like the Level I recently made) for decades

There were a couple of hairy set ups but no excitement ensued
