Thread: lathe turning taper toward headstock
31/12/2013 18:56:20

Hi Mike & Guys
What lathe is it ? are the bearing in the headstock adjusted ok ? if the job is held in a 3 jaw chuck the jaws may be worn at the front allowing the bar you are turning to push away. By the way Happy New Year to you & all the Guys on this forum
Regards Nobby

Thread: Shaper cutting tools
28/12/2013 22:11:31

Hi Lee & Guys
Here is a 1/2" square toolbit I use in my Drummond hand shaper . Similar to the one that Lee described for flat
surfaces . works well . as been mentioned shape may vary depending on the job . it cutting down the side of a block the claper box must be tilted so the tool swing away from block on return stroke

Hi

Stock bars of steel are painted on the end . ie Red for MS blue for free cutting etc for aircraft work materials are in a bonded store and marked , & have to be signed for .

Thread: Vice stop..........
04/12/2013 22:32:29

Hi Nick & Guys
The stop I use is clamped on the milling table . so you can move it back for larger jobs. also where you have a screw adjustment mine slid with a M6 locking screw but on the it it had a locking collar .so when you put the job against the stop. remove the sliding stop and the you can run the program to machine say a radius on the end.
Remove job. Slide the stop back onto the collar stop Load job machine etc .
This way you can also use it as a back stop the other side of the vice . also without a vice using a fence and clamps

Thread: Rear Tool Post
30/11/2013 16:31:32

Hi
As Martin says the rear toolpost is always there. Mine is an home made one for my S7 Mk1 with about 2 degrees rake and a slight angle one front so the job parts off cleanly then just finish off the last angled pip

Hi Bill
Don't try in reverse etc with a chuck that uncrews as it could result with the chuck coming off when you are cutting

Thread: Decent vernier height gauges ?
14/11/2013 18:43:09

HI Ronan
If you do buy an H.Gauge make sure that the scriber can reach the surface plate to read zero . some height gauges dont do this. The job/part has to be put on parallels take a reading etc
They may be more input on this.

Thread: Cutting shapes in sheet brass.
23/10/2013 23:38:48

Hi Jim welcome
How about using a scroll saw with a fine blade . on mine I also fit small files as well and use it like a filing
machine . What you have to watch is that the teeth spacing/ pitch is less the the brass thickness
Mine has a support arm on it to stop job jumping up when sawing/filing

Thread: A very small Shaping Machine ...
23/10/2013 18:26:28

Hi Julian and Guys
Sorry about the delay . felting the garden tool shed . on a shaper when at work years ago I used to make 36" long
half round cavity's top and bottom . some up to about 2" dia. I made a fixture that fitted in the clapper box facing
forward similar to a boring head that rotated with a toolbit the clapper was locked when using this
I roughed out first with a straight roughing tool . then finished with the fixture i made the two halfs dowled together then sent away for final lapping . then fitted in bolster . It was a 3 imp compression mould for a railway item
I will try and post a drawing
