Sorry about the mistake, it is an M type . Ken.

26/08/2020 19:30:28

I am writing this message for a friend that has recently purchased a Drummond Mk 4 , 3.5" Lathe. He is having difficulty trying to get everything to work and if any one in the Wetherby/ Leeds area has such a machine , Keith, would love to visit and discuss the various points that are giving him some trouble.

I will pass on any messages that you can send to me and Keith will no doubt contact you.

Ken.

The two round objects are valve lifters from some unknown engine Ken..

Thankyou gentlemen for your replies to my request , to David George 1, how do I or my friend Keith make direct contact with you to get more info ? I have Keith's email address if we are allowed to publish it here.

Thanks. Ken .

A friend has just bought an old Drummond Lathe, it is not a round bed but in its early life it was pedal operated and has now been converted to single phase electric. I am a Myford man so I have to ask the more knowledgeable readers this question , what is the unit that looks like an adjustable clutch that is situated inside the Bull Ring gear in the head stock but does not have an operating lever ?.

If anyone in the Wetherby/York area has one we would appreciate having a look at it .

Thread: identify
22/10/2019 19:15:33

I would like to thank all of the members that have helped me sort out the identification problem , just to fill in the picture all the bits an pieces of metal were rescued from a deceased friends workshop.

How can I tell the difference between Stainless steel and Silver steel , I know that Stainless is non magnetic and Silver is but how do I tell the difference between Silver, Stainless and normal Mild steel ?.

Thanking you all in anticipation of a simple answer. Ken.

Thread: Glass cutting
27/08/2019 09:07:28

I would just like to thank all of you for your very prompt replies to my request for bottle cutting, I was pleased to see that I had not imagined the string cutting technique

Thanks, Ken..

I am restoring a very old miners oil lamp and I need to cut a glass bottle to make the shield that protects the flame and stops it from igniting any gasses down the pit . How do I cut a bottle ?, I seem to remember reading that you can wrap a piece of string that has been soaked in some flammable liquid and set fire to it and this will do the job, any tips .

Thanks , Ken.

Thread: Myford ML7 - Size of Mandrel Through Drilling?

I think that the main question is how do you increase the bore ?

Thread: Using a lathe
28/06/2019 20:08:56

I have just been told that it is illegal for a person under the age of 16 to use a lathe, is this true or some one winding me up, ?.

Thread: Hexagonal Socket Drive
06/06/2019 19:36:50

In my apprenticeship days we still used the hexagon type socket sets , the advantage of them was the sockets being much slimmer than the square drive ones and you could get them into smaller gaps etc.

Thread: Welding helmet
25/02/2019 19:55:28

Just a small point , if you wear light reacting spectacles try to use plain lense ones, I found this out several years ago when I started wearing glasses and could not understand why my welding was not as good as it used to be , I was unable to follow a straight line etc welding went back to normal after the change.

Thread: turning hardened steel
19/12/2018 19:29:23

Hi Grizzly Bear, the job is for a friend who is building a "special" motor cycle and does not want the splines touching., I don't even know what make of bike it is from. I think that it will be cut in half and welded to another bikes drive shaft.

18/12/2018 19:44:54

I have been asked to reduce the diameter of a motor cycle drive shaft from 20mm to 18mm , as you will guess the shaft is hardened steel. Can I soften the shaft with heat treatment or how do I reduce it by normal turning in my Myford ?.

Thanks .

Thread: homemade anvil.
26/06/2018 19:49:20

Hi Mick,

I have used the sliding piece of an old 6" vice, I cut off the jaw part and now have a very useful "anvil" that I can strike on when needed.

Thread: Advice
13/05/2018 20:35:27

I have to drill up to 3 dozen 3/16" holes in some 1/16" sheet stainless steel and have been told that to make the work easier I should alter the angle of the drill point, is this correct and if so what should the angle be ?.

Thanks, Ken.

Thread: what am I
16/03/2018 10:53:49

Hello Brian, the only way that you can be sure is to have your MG tested or speak to an M.O.T tester, we accepted them in my day as a tester.

14/03/2018 19:38:12

In my younger days working on cars with cable brakes we called them butterflies, unfortunately they are now illegal to use them on vintage cars.

Thank you to all the members who have responded to my plea for help and in particular to Saxalby, I have fortunately been offered the use of taps from another local friend, once again, Thanks, Ken.
