Thread: Hand Hacksaw |
26/02/2022 06:38:39 |
How strange, my Eclipse hacksaw frame given to me at the start of my apprenticeship in 1963 has a die cast zinc based alloy handle. The other day, I noticed that the blade ran about 15 degrees out of true to the frame. I bent the handle back into shape, but at the same time treated myself to a new Stanley hacksaw - delivered for 7€90 and retired the old one to the garden shed - it had done me a sterling service and deserved a rest. Thread: recent power outage in Medway |
21/02/2022 09:29:15 |
So Clive wants to run a gas boiler in an electric outage. Assuming the gas is flowing, use a car battery and an inverter to run the gas boiler and pump - even better with a leisure battery. Simple enough circuit to isolate the boiler power supply. Elsewise, find a cheap hotel that accepts pets outside of the outage area? Why suffer ? Bob

Thread: HOW FAST - ANEMOMETER CALIBRATION ? |
18/02/2022 12:42:24 |
Noel asked how to calibrate it once made. Obvious choice is to use a wind gauge, but have a look on the net for a simple pendulum type wind gauge perhaps. Go to your local sailing club and ask a few questions see if you could check your anemometer with the club's one ? Also Martin's idea seems like an interesting one too. Bob |

Thread: First lathe owner in Manchester |

Hi Chris, I believe that the Southbend headstock spindle thread is the same diameter and pitch as the Boxford lathe BUT the thread angle is 60 degrees and not the 55 deg of the Boxford. That said, my Sb faceplate fits my Bx lathe. The bed ways are the same, so steady etc all fit OK. Someone else may be able to confirm that the screw cutting gears are the same ? Bob |
Thread: Running a Myford S7 in Reverse |
10/02/2022 15:18:52 |
Forward or backwards, I never understood why we choose the correct cutting speed for ordinary turning, but for screw cutting we use very slow speeds. Obviously there is a problem of engaging / disengaging the half nuts or even dog clutches at speed and the reason why slow cutting speeds are used. So how come we end up with acceptable thread finish at slow speed. There are auto retract tool holders that help us to increase cutting speed, but these are not used by many of us hobby engineers. Thread: Green growth on car roof rails |

Tim, zinc does the same. No moss below the zinc flashings. |
06/02/2022 15:37:26 |
Clive, try planting it. You never know, you may get a younger model ! I get the same on my front gates. Pressure washing does get it off, but it is difficult to get it out of the crevices of the scroll work and it comes back every couple of years. I did wonder about bleach which is what they use (in some form) on roof tiles to remove moss. I made a wooden garage out of Douglas fir and treated it with this product Treatment . 3 years down the line and not a spot of "green stuff" and the garage is overshadowed by an ash tree on one corner and a plum tree on another, but no idea as to what it would do on rubber/metal etc. This product is available in the UK UK supplier and for those building wooden sheds etc, I can heartily recommend it. PKG's Trolley Problem, Do nothing, record it all on your mobile phone, put it on the net straight away seems to be the modern trend!
Dave, what is the "Code" when you park on the "Wrong" side of the road ? And when your passengers get out onto the LHS of the car - They open the door looking backwards and side swipe a cyclist who is passing the parked car. Bob |

You would probably be OK for the first 15 years and after that I would start to worry! I would be more worried if you were on a ship, but even some of them are made from aluminium alloys. Bob |

Thread: Boxford VSL 500 Drive Pulley |
31/01/2022 06:44:29 |
Just seen Roys post (after I had just typed this up) - I agree with his diagnosis as this is very similar to the Boxford AUD. Looking at photo 5, it may be that the damage was initially caused by the spindle lock pin shearing the slice off of the pulley. If there had been a stuck chuck and excessive force was used to remove it, that force would have been transmitted through spindle lock pin and then the machined slot in the pulley. Incidentally, there is a wear mark on the piece which sheared off. Was that caused by the spindle lock pin ? Hopper's idea may be the best way forward -If you have access to another larger lathe.
