Thread: Forum message system |

I find it strange that you need to put an e mail address on an open forum with so many scammers out there, why can't it just be contact by PM |
Thread: re seating a ball?? |
01/11/2018 17:11:13 |
Another way to do this is to solder a new ball onto a small shaft and apply very fine grinding past or burnishing cream and lap it as you would a car valve then replace the old ball with a new one after cleaning out |
Thread: "pre-moderated" |
01/11/2018 15:47:08 |
This is to stop spammers coming in and posting links and the like to business site so they can get free advertising as well as other things like that. Sorry mods it is just that I am the moderator on the sister site Getwoodworking so have to do the same thing |
Thread: Polishing Castings |
30/10/2018 20:05:24 |
Like any hobby that uses a sandpaper/emery paper to smooth a surface the important thing is to start with a grit that will remove (in your case machine marks), then when you have removed those go to the next grit of paper in the range. Do not skip a grit and remove the marks of the previous grit each time this will make it easier to get the required finish that is needed |
Thread: Win 10 updates (again) |
30/10/2018 13:34:58 |
It always makes me think with the amount of updates do they use up memory on a device or do they automaticaly replace the parts that are out of date |
Thread: Hemingway Hacksaw |
25/10/2018 18:34:08 |
Just read this post and enjoyed your journey so far. Like many I have also found that I start a project and end up making jigs and the like many can be used for other projects and some are just a one off. I still enjoy making them as much as the project in question |

Derek Lane 2: Looking at your second photo, were you third equal? I very much like those plates. Two different classes one for those that had entered competitions before and the other for first time of showing mine was the second class |

Derek Lane 2: It is a long time since I visited the Woodworker exhibition at the Palace but I am sure I should have remembered your piece if I had had the pleasure of seeing it in the wood. Hollowing the sphere and managing the lid must have taken some planning! The hollowing was done first. This was the table for the last one and also the winners table Edited By Derek Lane 2 on 24/10/2018 21:55:46 |

With tools held in a metal lathe the finish is not always too good as hand held woodturning tools you rub the bevel before cutting the wood so in effect are planing the wood. Ball are easy to do by hand if only doing small quantities as some of the jigs can be expensive. This was done free hand and is near as possible a perfect sphere it did require the sharpening of the tool quite a bit as ply knocks off the edge very quick. The sphere is 4" diameter. This came third in the last woodworking show at Alexander palace some years ago |
Thread: classifieds and access to details of items for sale |
23/10/2018 17:08:54 |
i may not make many posts but do understand the reasons for the rule about how many posts before being able to use the classified, and in the same vain can also understand those that have stuff which is relevant to this hobby not being able to post for sale especially if they no longer follow the or take part in using their equipment. The only thing that i do get a little frustrated with is the picture posted can not be enlarged to get a proper look at the item or those that choose not to even bother with posting a photo in the first place. But then as a newbie here should I really be allowed to complain |
Thread: Hay bales |
20/10/2018 19:19:38 |
I have only ever seen one or two model balers and both of these were working with a threshing machine. The one in this picture is owned by a friend of mine. Shame about the wheels on the thresher and bailer.

As a woodturner we use something that is called Nyweb which is an abrasive each colour donates a different grit they are not limited to use on wood only. This is how I buy mine HERE |

I buy citric acid powder to clean off light rust, I have wondered if that is OK as pickle solution. But I do get asked what it is for at the chemist It gets used to cut drugs. I wonder how many people have responded 'I've got a bag of heroin I need to stretch out...' A bit like that USA visa question 'have you ever taken part in or planned an act of terrorism of genocide?' - one poor lady answered 'yes' by accident. Neil I did not want to put why they asked that. The chemist now gets use to me buying it and knows why I need it, so far no funny knocks on the front door by men in uniforms |

Thread: I would like to say |
22/09/2018 22:14:36 |
Thank you guys know the score when it comes to buying starting tools as I have already brought some and some I already owned from my plant mechanic days. I already have a pillar drill which I use for both wood and metal as well as two bandsaws one I will dedicate for metal and the larger will be for wood. I know that the accessories can soon add up as that is the same as woodturning which I run two lathes with 4 chucks as well as different jaw sets for them. I plan to have one end of the workshop dedicated for wood and the other metal and the machines that I can safely use with both without cross contamination in the middle. To prevent wood shavings from the wood lathes will be screened off with a shower curtain as the shavings from them tend to fly everywhere. As for the wood dust I will have two dust extractors set up only one running at a time.

Even though I have not been here very long I would like to say how I have enjoyed reading a lot of the posts. There are certainly a lot of very knowledgeable people here that One day I will pick your brains when I am ready to take the plunge and buy some machines,( still saving for them and the pot is getting bigger) Some of the posts I do have to look things up not knowing what they relate too. As per the title I would like to say thank you all for a great forum |

Hi Derek, Is it my imagination or do they have a shallow taper as well as a fast taper? If so, they are probably intended for milling draft on patterns or moulds. Neil
I meant to have a look but twice I forgot and locked up the workshop. I will have a look tomorrow if I can remember |
Thread: Cleaning castings by hand |
17/09/2018 17:33:00 |
Like yourself I have yet to buy my equipment but in the mean time I have spent ( in between woodturning and woodwork ) Using any pieces of metal and practice using files. I also have had a go at drilling with my drill press and reaming. I also have some silver solder which is of unknown grade that I have been getting the feel of joining pieces of metal including brass. I know it would be nice to have a go at something and see an end result but I would like to be able to at least mess up odd bits than on a nice casting from a kit. I am also collecting various odd tools as well I have made a straight edge which is both straight and level as well as being at right angles but then I have a small surface plate and a proper right angle mounting plate ( sorry not sure what the correct name is). Seen sitting on the surface plate in this photo
