Been there and enjoyed the second visit the first was spent walking around the outside on guard duty when I was training as a tank crew member |
Thread: Oils for Hardening |
19/11/2022 16:24:54 |
Thank you all |
19/11/2022 11:56:00 |
I don't need to know the ins and out of different oils Just a simple what oils do you find best for quenching when hardening steel. I only want to know from those that have used oils to hardened steel Edited By Dalboy on 19/11/2022 11:56:26 |
Thread: Super Steel epoxy |
18/11/2022 16:38:46 |
I take it from all of the comments that no one has used it or even knows what it is like |
18/11/2022 07:49:16 |
Has any one tried THIS instead of JBWeld and is it any good |
Thread: Hemingway taper turning kit for a Myford lathe |
06/11/2022 20:35:01 |
Is this the one I found this useful

Thread: Excavating a deep hole in a log |
04/11/2022 16:20:28 |
Not the best way to dish out a log as it is more likely split very easily and you will end up with two halves. The only wood ideal for end grain turning is something like Yew. But if you know a friendly woodturner who has hollowing tools then that would be ideal it could also be done with a sturdy bowl gouge |
Thread: Inheritance Machining |
30/10/2022 09:37:17 |
i too saw this on my u tube notifications and thought they would be a great addition a little like Clicksprings latest video on clamps. But like many things stopping to make all these good ideas takes me away from my Rob Roy build unless it is something that is needed. Clicksprings Video |
Thread: Casting and machining motorcycle risers |
30/10/2022 09:31:00 |
Motor bikes are not my cup of tea but a good job on the risers. Some good points raised in my limited knowledge on these things so can't make a judgment on whether they are suitable Posted by Luker on 29/10/2022 18:48:29:
I’m a firm believer that anybody can do anything with a little reading and just giving it a go! The notion that ‘home made’ is not as good as ‘professional’ is (in my humble opinion) an absolute fallacy. I remember someone saying to me years ago "Do you want the job done properly or Professionally" And it always made me laugh Edited By Dalboy on 30/10/2022 09:32:03 |
Thread: The cheek of McDonalds |

Posted by Bill Phinn on 18/10/2022 18:31:09:
Am I the only person here who's never had food, or what passes for food, at McDonalds? Add me to that list why people go mad for it is beyond me |
Thread: Bare or Full |
14/10/2022 21:05:06 |
There is a mention of Bare and Full in the book "Model Engineering A Foundation Course" by Peter Wright on page 35 for those that have it |
14/10/2022 12:12:16 |
Thank you for the answers. I am not refering to a bore size rather the length of a shaft which requires the fitting bearing to freely rotate IE: if a rod need to be held on by a nut yet is able to freely rotate which means the measurement is classed on the plans as full, however if the component needs to be a tight fit then it refers to this as being a bare fit. Clive the 10% was just a figure I plucked out of thin air and only used as an example. I must say that a tolerance would have been a better way to have put this on the plans or an over sized measurement to suit the application Edited By Derek Lane on 14/10/2022 12:13:56 |
14/10/2022 11:09:23 |
When a plan says bare or full what do you concider to add or subtract to the measurement given. Do you just guesstimate or do you say for example work to a percentage for example 10% of the size either way depending on whether it is bare or full.
I am just making two identical pieces and was thinking of 0.010" over as the size is 3/16"

Thread: Engineering Shows |
13/10/2022 14:49:45 |
Not sure if Chronos will be there but I just had an e mail saying THIS is back in stock may not be high quality |
Thread: What are these? Die half’s? |
11/10/2022 18:42:55 |
The half dies were also made by Warrior. I posted this picture before in another thread. This shows the holder and securing piece as well as 4 different dies with their respective sized guides |
Thread: Making a simple part for a friend |
06/10/2022 09:57:50 |
As far as I can see the explanation of Jason's post was all that was needed and all the other posts seem to fall under the " Hijacking and wilfully destroying threads The forum's a big place and thread titles and descriptions are there to help you filter what you're interested in, so please let more serious threads run broadly on topic.". It is not easy for someone to stand in front of a camera and produce a video so well done on that @Steviegtr. |
Thread: I just had to buy these … |
28/09/2022 13:42:10 |
I like the "Try Me" when they are sealed in |
Thread: Cast Iron V Steel |
25/09/2022 15:23:22 |
Like any lathe if turning off centre the heavier the better. I know people that add an extra shelf below the bed which is hollow and they put sand into it to prevent this. The faster you can turn (To a point) the better the finish especially if turning something with plenty of air like this.
Remember that wood turners tend to hand hold the cutting chisels and when turning fast gives less chance of the tool getting pushed into gaps.

Thread: Sawing Plate |
24/09/2022 22:17:35 |
I have also cut some ali on my wood cutting bandsaw but only when the blade is near it's end of life. Mine does have the option to slow it down with the change of the drive belt position which is what the instruction say that the slower speed is for metal cutting. That was before I brought a dedicated metal cutting saw |
Thread: Reader Participation |
23/09/2022 17:01:20 |
I for one don't feel as I can contribute much as I am in the very early stages of the hobby and still learning. As for making tools as stated at the moment it is easier to buy something rather than make something so that I can concentrate on my Rob Roy build which is on hold due to building an wooden model excavator for one of the great grandchildren.
