The floating blue wire appears to be a connection to mains neutral. According to the circuit diagram there should be a mains neutral connection to terminal A2 of the contractor. Without this the contractor will not operate. I suggest you check to see if the connection to A2 is missing.

+1 for the Ward design. A very well thought through design which is inexpensive to build and easy to use.

Thread: Claude Reeves Gravity Escapement Regulator Clock

I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has successfully built an example of this clock. I am currently at an advanced stage with my own clock, and I have an issue with the escapement.

What speed was the lathe running at in the video?

On the subject of motor ratings, it’s worth noting that 3 phase motors have improved performance compared to their single phase equivalents. As noted in an earlier post, Myford specify a 3/4 hp single phase motor for the Super7. However for 3 phase use they specify a 1/2 hp motor. When I converted my own Super 7 to VFD I used a 1/2 hp motor (because I had one on the shelf) and it’s always seemed perfectly adequate.

If you’re looking for an unusual clock you could look at Claude Reeves gravity regulator. I’m building one at the moment, and it’s certainly interesting. Plans available from Ian T Cobb (clockmakingbrass.co.uk).

Thread: S7 Tail stock

Robert

Are you quite sure you have a Super 7 tailstock, not an ML7 tailstock? The ML7 tailstock is not self-ejecting, and is open at the rear to allow for a drift to remove tooling. On a Super7 tailstock there is no access for "tapping out" MT2 tooling.

If it's the Adept No2 currently up for £180 it doesn't have auto feed. I have a similar machine myself. Occasionally comes in useful.

Thread: Sino SDS-2MS Dro problems

Bob

I have no problems if I use the stored diameter value. The problem is when I try to overwrite it with a new value.

15/08/2017 18:09:45

Ian. I can't see how the polarity of the axes would affect the particular problem I'm having, but thanks for the suggestion.

Bob/Clive

I've gone through the videos and tried operating in metric mode only, but still get funnies. Some progress though.

Let me go through the steps and maybe you can explain what's happening.

- I move the table to the centre of the hole pattern and zero both axes

- I select pcd mode. X and y displays show 0.00, and other display shows CNTR POS

- I press enter and down arrow. Displays show last entered diameter, and DIA

- I enter, say, 10.0 for the required pattern diameter, expecting to overwrite the stored value, but the display shows 0.1, then 0.00 when I press enter !

This was where I was previously getting stuck. However, I have just found that if I press enter again, then 10.0 followed by enter everything works correctly.

I don't understand, but this sequence seems to work reliably every time.

Any suggestions?

I should have explained the problem more clearly. It's not to do with the number of holes. The problem occurs when I try to enter the pitch circle diameter after entering the centre coordinates. The data usually displays with the decimal point in the wrong place, and I can see no way to edit. If I come out of pcd mode and start again it sometimes works correctly! I was hoping that the correct manual might show some step I am missing.

14/08/2017 13:59:24

I fitted a Sino SDS-2MS Dro to my mill last year. It's been very reliable and accurate, but I am having problems setting up the pcd hole pattern function. The Dro was supplied by Machine DRO, but came with a manual for a later model, SDS6. I was assured that this manual also covered the SDS2, but I have found that while most of the functions are the same, the data entry steps for some functions such as pcd don't work. Now I guess this could be a hardware fault, but before I go down that route I want to be quite sure I am following the correct set up steps for this model dro. Machine DRO can't supply the correct manual for some reason, and I've got nowhere trying to communicate with the manufacturer.

Does anyone know of a source of the correct manual, or if you have such a manual would you be willing to copy some pages for me?

Thanks

I made some extra toolholder for my Dickson tool post a while back, and the originals did indeed contact on all 4 faces (checked with blue). With care and a little final scraping I managed to get my copies to contact similarly.

The backplate will be intended for 7 series lathes, so will have the 12 tpi/1.125 whit. thread. It will also have a 1.25 parallel register to locate precisely on the mandrel. Does your ML4 have this register? My recollection is that ML4s didn't. You could get around this with a suitable sleeve, but it needs to be very accurately made.

There is is a little bit more info buried in a footnote on one of the Myford pages on Lathes.com site.

** Ted Barrs served his engineering apprenticeship during the 1920s, completing it alongside his best pal, Bill Day, who went on to found The North London Saw Works, at Waltham Cross - a business still running today (2014).
In 1931 Ted married and, with twin daughters born in 1935, moved to Beeston in 1942 to take up employment with Myford. Like most of his generation in senior engineering positions he was a hands-on man and, when his apprentices found a job too difficult, he would go down to the shop floor and demonstrate how it should be done.
Popular with both the owners (the Moore family) and with the workforce he rose to become Works manager. However, even after he retired he would spent many hours each week at the factory in an 'advisory' capacity - he really did live and breathe Myford machine tools.
Every year his young nephew Phillip, together with his father, I would go to the Model Engineering Exhibition in London, not only to see the models on display but, just as importantly, to see Ted. One visit Phillip spent an hour on the Myford stand learning woodturning from their demonstrator, a Mr. Fred Payne; "
He taught me more about the craft in an hour than I would ever have learnt at school in a year."

Could it be that the gear was specified in terms of its circular pitch? From your numbers the gear has a circular pitch very close to 0.08.

Thanks chaps.

Sounds as though I need to source a few square inches of 303 or 316 sheet, and run the mill a bit faster.
