Unfortunatly a cheap multimeter may not be safe. Anything new costing under £10 is unlikely to be properly designed and constructed to the standards required for safe use on mains. Hi,you’ve just recommend one “72-13440” which is only £7.84 sold by CPC. Maurice |

Universal motors speed up until the load matches the drive power of the motor. If run without load they just go faster and faster until they either seize or grenade. Generally universal motors carry a cooling fan which presents enough load under overspeed conditions to prevent grenade. Usually. Clive Hi,Why doesn’t a mains electric drill with no load go faster and faster and seize ? These have brushes. Maurice

Hi, MichaelG , Is it possible to open the case of the unit ,if it is you could unsolder original cable and solder new cable in its place. Maurice |

Hi, Buy a lead with C7 on one end and C8 on the other . Cut this lead close to plug end ,cut flash head cable close to flash head ,solder wires together and use heat shrink to cover joint . Fit mains plug to other end of socket cable. Maurice |

Hi, Why not do it the easy way ,use a 2 pin garden equipment plug and socket cable joiner. Maurice |
Thread: Getting Myford oiled up |

Hi,When I got my ML7 ,I got an old oil gun from a steam rally for a couple of quid ,it did not fit the nipples on the ML7. Then I used the ML7 to make a new end for the oil gun ,this fitted the nipples. Job done easy, ML7 oiled. Maurice |

Questions: Are boats level, when at sea? If they needed to be precisely level to the planet Earth surface, how did the navy cope with all those Drummonds during the war? Not only are ships not level, they roll, yaw, pitch, hog and sag! And if the wave length is just right, repeated hogging and sagging doesn't take long to break a ship in half. Got me wondering how violently a lathe could be moved before it stopped cutting straight. Myfords would be no good in an airliner because a sharp dive would empty all the oil out, but I think they would cut OK until the bearing seized. Not a problem with well-designed Chinese lathes because they would work OK upside down! Dave Hi,please explain where oil would empty from a Myford. They have a total loss system fed by two glass sealed oilers. Thank you Maurice

Hi,A 1/2 hp Brook motor on an ML7 takes nearly 50A for 100mS on start ,this will sometimes trip a domestic mcb but probably wouldn’t trip an inductive load mcb ,as previously mentioned .An earth leakage fault would trip the elcb not the mcb. |

Hi ,please don't waste your time looking for faults until you've run the engine and then switched everything on and checked the battery voltage and that it's charging. I think the lights used to dim at tickover anyway on a 6volt system. Maurice |

I would not want to use anything that was not designed to put in one’s mouth. So Milton (or supermarket own brand version) is ok as is denture cleaner. Washing powder, bleach, do not “tick the boxes” for me! . Hi Milton contains sodium hypochlorite as does Domestos , I use Domestos to clean spoons as it takes far less time to do the job. Maurice |
