Hi Rick,

welcome aboard the good ship ME/MEW/MHS.

I've visited your site onj several ocassions and found your input for the DRO350 invaluable, I still have one and would love that Scott release the firmware source to public domain, I don't see any reason not to now that it has been 'superceeded'.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article in MEW 188, well written and very relevant. In the current climate, if we can do things accurately, and on the cheap then why not, you are employng basic principles which many have forgotten, this article brings all of these principles together in a very readable format.t

It reminded me of some of the basic things I had long forgotten since serving my apprenticeship in BSC (British steel Corporation), long since sadly subsumed by Corus et al. I remember the days......another story LOL

Thank you

Graeme

Regarding Davids advice on Credit cards, I would endorse that, I have a M&S card as a 'named holder' on my wifes account. We had to contact them to 'add' me as an insured card holder, no cost involved but it does mean that any transactions I place are covered in the same way as the primary card holder.

This is something that all should be aware of as so called secondary card holders do not always inherit the same priviledges of the primary card holder.

What I can't get to grips with is "Recycled" toilet paper.

I find the recycled stuff has a much better 'grip' factor than the more expensive varieties

Remember that we're not allowed to flag them up using the 'Report'.

Terry

Why on earth not? Surely that is what the Report function is there for!

And who says we are not 'allowed'

It's about time the forum owners i.e. MHS started taking positive steps to combat these spam postings. Start by blocking the Chinese IP subnets at the firewalls, this can be quite easily done with a request to the hosting provider. Spam filtering is more dificult, looking for key words or phrases would most likely not have stopped these postings.

It may now be necessary to start using one time only moderation so that any new users posts are checked before being allowed on the site. This would delay genuine new users but I think we would all rather have that than trawling through endless spam to find the posts we reall want to see.

Guess that would be these people http://uk.emc.com/index.htm big US corporate provider of SAN equipment, think they've 'owned' the name a little longer than Enhanced Machine Control has been in existence. I always wondered how long it would be before they had to change the name indecision

dont be tempted to heat it - i tried this and it was a complete disaster!!

Hmm, maybe the method employed may have been at fault here, without more info it is hard to judge.

Heating ally or its composites always presents problems. In most cases the methods decribed above will prove effective. Everyday washing up liquid is an adequate indicator of the correct temperature. Once the soap turns dark brown, the ally will have reached the required temperature to be 'annealed' The indicatore (soap) should be on the opposite site to that which heat is applied. Keep the torch moving all the time.

It can then be worked into shape. If there are numerous shaping operations, then the ally should be annealed after each process is complete in order to relieve stresses and allow the materiel to take up complex shapes.

Ian,

Why the attitude, someone is offering something you may want, makes a polite response, uses a generally accepted English firendly term and you get all bent out of shape over it!!!

Mate, you really need to lighten up a little,.

marra, pal,. buudy, friend, etc etc.

It is all just a term of polite friendliness, don't take it to heart or be offended!!!

Chill dude

Diamond wheels are available from a number of suppliers here in the UK,

try http://www.rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/DIAMOND_GRINDING_WHEEL_S.html or

for starters.

Thread: Instructions for using SCAYT?
27/02/2012 19:51:49

Hmm, odd as SCAYT is 'supposed' to be be a plugin for the CK Editor, which I had assumed by the skin, was what was being used for this forum (we use this as an editor for our webmail) however, it does not seem to support all of the natural functionalilty of the CK Editor - hardly surprising considering the way in which MHS seem to bastardise everything associated with this forum!!!!!!!

Hi Ian, you will need to change the motor from star to delta wiring to runn off a 220v inverter. Check if your terminal box has the appropriate jumper strips, if you're not sure what to look for, look here: http://www.drivesdirect.co.uk/how_to_choose.htm

Thread: Source of Imperial Flanged Oilite Bushes
26/02/2012 18:01:14

Hi Jason, the closest I found is 5/8 x 7/8 x 1 1/4 from http://www.bearingboys.co.uk/?catid=2568&att1=5%2F8&att2=7%2F8&att3=1.1%2F4&att4=

As it is only the OD you are machining, it should be fine, just machine slowly and don't let the bearing overheat, also I suggest not using any coolant as this will potentially be absorbed by the bush.

cheers

Thread: Which lathe from these four?
25/02/2012 23:15:25

Before you even consider what lathe you want or think you need, you need to ask yourself - what do I want to make?

Are you building small table top stationary engines?

are you likely to build a 4" scale traction engine?

Do you have desires to build a 7 1/4 gauge loco?

I looked at all of these and more when I purchased my current lathe, having already owned several machines previously.

I settled on a Warco GH1330 which gives me a 12" swing over the bed and over 18" in the gap.

A larger lathe can do small work (my 5C collet chuck goes down to 1/16th and up to 1"

A small lathe is handy to have, but I would have something Myford sized in addition to the big lathe.

Thread: Quorn Castings
24/02/2012 13:42:44

Hi All,

An update on Model Engineering Services:

I spoke with Michael Law this afternoon who is in the process of re-launching MES (I also had a very pleaseant chat with Ivan prior to this smiley).

Michael has a small number of sets of Quorn castings available and for those who are genuinely interested, please PM me and I will put you in touch with him.

Michael expects to re-launch the site in the next 2 - 3 months, other commitments permitting and subject to the availability of the casting kits he plans to sell.

Unlike before, MES will only be selling casting kits and not complete materiel kits as they feel this brings the price into a better marketplace and as most of us have reasonable access to bar stock etc, the opinion is that it is more viable to supply casting only kits.A

Sounds very promising, I will post any further info as soon as I have it.

regards

Graeme

Thread: Mandrel Handle
23/02/2012 21:14:29

Hi Nobby, there are guidelines available from DC1 which give very clear instructions how to prepare an article for publishing. The drawings don't need to be CAD quality, in fact I believe that the majority are not. Grammer and spelling can be corrected during editing, it is the content of the article that is important, this does look like a very interesting project, I don't own a Myford but that wouldn't stop me building one to adapt for my Warco GH machine.

regards
