Instructions for using SCAYT?

Since we seem to be stuck with the new text editors built in spellchecker I thought I would try and use it but it has me baffled!

I prefer to create posts online rather than copy and pasting from another programme so I don't really want instructions on how to do that.

I enabled SCAYT, it then underlines (very slowly) miss spelled words, but that seems top be the limit of its capabilities. I know must have at least one user dictionary on my pc but I'm not sure what it is called or whether SCAYT can use it. If it does use a dictionary file will it then correct (or offer corrections) to words it does not know?

Once SCAYT is enabled does it stay enabled the next time the PC is booted up? In the SCAYT options it asks for the name of a dictionary. I typed a filename complete with path but it does not seem to have created it. Looking in the root of my hard drive I can see a 'custom.dic' file which I did not know existed however the words it contains relate to a (Word) document I created about a month ago, although I am sure Word, which I have used for years on this PC already had a dictionary.

As I type this posting though, I am finding things out, first SCAYT thinks SCAYT is a spelling error! Second, it will offer to replace words but only if I put the cursor over the underlined word (rather than sequentially going through the whole paragraph, Third its clunky.

Am I being unkind to this new technology, I don't object to the new editor but why oh why cant I just right click like I used to?

Hmm, odd as SCAYT is 'supposed' to be be a plugin for the CK Editor, which I had assumed by the skin, was what was being used for this forum (we use this as an editor for our webmail) however, it does not seem to support all of the natural functionalilty of the CK Editor - hardly surprising considering the way in which MHS seem to bastardise everything associated with this forum!!!!!!!

I am bumping this thread rather than create a new one.

I know there have been some changes to the spelling checker options recently and I am sure I read in one very recent post that we can use 'ctrl <something?> to enable the browsers own checker. I cannot find the post as I want to know what the 'something' is.

Or did I imagine it?

No, you didn't imagine it, Ian. The way the editor was configured, it suppressed the (built-in or add-on) spell-checker in your browser. You had to use SCAYT or nothing. Katy has changed it so that your browser spell-checker is not longer suppressed.

By default most (all?) browser spell checkers underline or otherwise highlight spelling errors and you right-click on them to choose what course of action you want. That right click conflicts with something in the editor so you have to use ctrl-right-click instead.

I tried that combination several time earlier today and a menu came up with lots of options. The only one I thought relevant was 'Spell Checker Options' which allowed me to configure it.

Now I looked again and realise that I never looked at the TOP of the menu item list, where of coarse the correctly spelled words are shown!

I much prefer whatever Chrome has built in than the Scayt thing.

Sorry for the confusion, this has not really been tested as thoroughly as I would like, but was enabled as a result of the 'new look' thread, so implementation has been a little haphazard.

The upshot is, you should now have access to your preferred browser spell check, rather than the editor's inbuilt SCAYT, if you wish to use it..

This means that on typing in the editor box here

1. Any typing errors/unknown words will be underlined in red with a wavy line regardless of whether or not you have enabled the in editor SCAYT, using your browser native spell check system, if it has one.
2. To correct any of these potentially misspelt words, you will need to use Ctrl and right click to choose a correct spelling from the suggested list (at the top of the menu) . If you only right click, rather than Ctrl right click, you will bring up a menu from the editor which doesn't include spell check, which offers paste etc and may confuse you.
3. This should help those of you that currently have common ME specific English words added to your own browser spell check

If you don't use a browser spell check, but would like to spell check your posts using the inbuilt spell checker do the following instead. This is the default behaviour from last week, before the layout change.

1. Type your post as normal
2. Click the 'ABC' button on the text editor toolbar and 'Enable SCAYT'
3. Right click on any misspelled words to correct. Some suggested words may not be appropriate as this dictionary will be less conversant with ME terms than one you've added to yourself;

Can anyone help? I have an English (GB) Language Pack 24.0 plugin, but it insists on querying UK spellings e.g. 'colour' has a red zig underneath but 'color' does not This is in Firefox.

I have no idea how to get it to be active. I don't have a US English plugin installed.

I have default Firefox 24.0, with no language plugins and my language is set to English Language (UK), color is corrected to colour for me with no problems

Neil: that might depend on what browser you are using. I'm using Firefox 18 and I've added "British English Dictionary 19.1.

If I check Add-ons it says it's enabled and certainly seems to be (it complains about color but not colour).

Hmm. FF 24.0 here (18 is stone age!), but I can't see where to change the language. I installed teh plugin several versions ago, but it appears never to have worked.

Hmm. Hmm. I';ve changed the 'language web pages are displayed in' from English (US) to English (En) and retarted Firefox. It's still highlighting colour and not color

In the old days, it would be stone age. Back when Mozilla used to roll out well-tested new version every 6 months to a year. Not these days though when they push out the stuff every few weeks trying to keep up with Chrome and then fix, fix, fix for the bugs.

I keep an eye on mozilla.support.firefox and when (if ) 24 looks reasonably stable I may update

This may help with the spell checker.
