About ten years ago I had a design for a mandrel handle published in ME. I was (and am) pleased with the 'floating collet' design that made it both short (so it doesn't fill up the whole spindle bore) and easy to fix. But it was alweays a bit slow as I needed an M10 spanner to tighten or loosen it. Over the last couple of months I started using a small steel plate spanner, the kind that come free with a flat-pack, and realised that if I silver soldered it to the nut life would become easy.

It is literally a 2-second job to fit or remove the improved model. In these days of variable speed drives you see few designs for such handles, but I find mine invaluable for tapping and threading.

Looks a LOT better than putting the key in the chuck!

Phew! So you apply the cut manually with the top lever which keeps the index against the template?

Hi Neil
Thank you for elert email. The adjustment of the stylus is made by unlocking knurled screw and adjusting the screw bottom right in photo to adjust the cut . you cant see them but there are lines marked on it .
As its one to one. Its quite pleasing to use Not CNC !!!!!
Its important the the cutter shape is the same as the copy sylus. On the 2nd picture you can see the slide
Sorry I'm drifting away from mandrel handles

Nobby is that a published design or your own invention?

Hi CB Neil & Guys
Its my own work . The slide photo 2 was off an old plain lathe a Mate gave me The long slotted bar came from the side off a box I used to maake or compresssion moulding M/Cs. All the shaped knobs were made using itself wiith just standard nuts.I did use it on my Bantam lathe but the pattern was at the top. hench the slotted bar.

Nobby,

That should be written up for MEW even if it is for one of those hated M$*@£ds which nobody seems to like except those of us who have one ! Anyway any engineer worth his salt should be able to take the idea & adapted it for his own lathe !

Quickly dons flak jacket, tinhat & mans the barricade.

Hi Neil & Nick
Thank for interest in one of my workshop project . The problem is I have no drawings. and my spelling is awful. As you may know I'm not into making models but workshop items whats next I wonder ? I have an idea for shapping round U shape forms on a shaper . or simple wheel dresser for angles

Nobby,

Why not send David C a message? Spell checkers and editors can sort spelling, their graphics guy redraws everything anyway - it's the ideas that count.

Hi Nobby, there are guidelines available from DC1 which give very clear instructions how to prepare an article for publishing. The drawings don't need to be CAD quality, in fact I believe that the majority are not. Grammer and spelling can be corrected during editing, it is the content of the article that is important, this does look like a very interesting project, I don't own a Myford but that wouldn't stop me building one to adapt for my Warco GH machine.

regards

CB

Hi David & CbB & Guys
Thank you for your interest . What I will do is to make a few scetches Add dims etc and take some more photos & get in touch . CB it would be fine for your lathe as it was Ok On by bantam late & could fit easy on my 1903-12 Drummond.
You may see most of the angle & flat are bought a B&Q \

My stepson asked to borrow my pop rivetter today. We were talking rivetty things when I noticed that the little spanner was missing from its socket on the rivetter handle...

Now I know where the one on my mandrel handle came from.

Funny old world...

Hi Neil
Its nice to hear that your Stepson is into riveting . One one of my other posts i said about no metal work projects for my Grandsons. No wonder engineering in this country has taken a backstage.
