Have a look for "telescopic plastic boxes" I assume thats the type you mean rather than the hinged top ones the likes of Dormer use.

Thread: Model Engineer Page Count increase and free plans |

Thats just a bit too big, this is a nice one that will fit in your garage, short advert at the start.
If you want a bar stock hit and miss then Model Engine Builder mag has a couple, with a bit of imagination you can make them look like mine all bar stock except flywheels.
A finger engine would be something else to consider, easy enough for a beginner and a quick project for teh more experienced.

Westbury's Vulcan would suit the beam engine but the castings are no cheap so I can't see that being included. I'm quite tempted to double up Anthony Mounts E & A Grasshopper, should just get a 10" Flywheel on the face plate
![]() The Wyvern & Centaur would bot be able to power something but there is a lot of fabrication or casting costs.
The DX roller would be nice but I don't think the castings are even available now, and the build articles are on the web anyway.
I think a barstock engine would be the most appealing with more readers likely to give it a go with bits from the scrap/stock pile. Also being quite a small item could make a nice break from a large project.

The problem is that this site will only display a square avitar so any landscape or portrate image will get cropped.
Best to alter the image you upload to one thats square or in your case add some white above & below not to the sides as mentioned above

Thread: Hampshire exhibition |
21/06/2009 12:26:22 |
After a quick look at the toolfair & elliots sites it was quite clear to me what type of show it would be, there are a number of these shows around the country where all the powertool makers have their demos and I would not have expected it to be engineering related.
Also the other events listed in that box on page 613 were not particularly engineering related so why expect one of them to be. It does say that Myhobbystore will be attending not ME or MEW.

Try this company company, they do repairs and recons so should be able to help with screws.

I would have thought it unlikely they would use non standard screws, the metric pitches for M4 are 0.5, 0.7 and 0.75. Are you able to give a more exact pitch in tpi or mm.
0.6mm is not far of 40tpi at 0.635 so it could be 5/32x40 or even a non prefered american thread such as 8-40 UNS.

The "my account" box in the top left shows if there are any unread messages, the number of messages is shown in brackets against the "My Messages" link so you don't need to open another window to see if one is there.

Thread: Transfers |
13/06/2009 08:30:30 |
If you google "waterslide transfer paper" you will get plenty of results.
Basically you print the image onto the special paper. Once dry you treat it like any other watersilde transfer, some need a spray to fix the image others don't. You can get different ones depending on if you want to print with a injet, lazer or colour copier.

Thread: Long URL's - a general plea |
12/06/2009 16:57:34 |
Sorry about that I was just a bit pushed for time, would go back and
edit the post but this site only seems to allow you to edit a post for a
short time then you can't get back into it. Its still readable as it does
not make the post box very wide, at least not on my computer
Its also a bit of a long winded way to do it, having to open another
window, usually I would just put url befor and /url after in square
brackets.

Thread: cutting copper |
12/06/2009 16:50:57 |
If its simply cutting to size then a fine toothed hacksaw say 32tpi will do. It can help to sandwich the plate between scraps of ply or MDF to reduce the risk of teh blade catching.
To finish the edge then a decent sharp second cut file will do
What are you making as it will give a better idea of what type of cutting is required.

Thread: Globe valve castings |
11/06/2009 21:15:30 |
Try these
http://www.miniature-engineering.com/ does one offs and also some of MJ Engineerings castings
http://www.rgsengineering.net/ Cast his own 4" & 6" Fowler
Or have a word with Abbey who does lost wax casting
Having said that the cylinder needs machining on every surface so you could machine from the solid, I know of a 2" Minnie that was done that way from a block of Meehanite. The chimney saddle could be fabricated by turning the flange & splayed base then soldering this to a piece of plate bent to the outer radius of teh firebox. I've seen a 3" Fowler done this way and it looks better than the casting.

You may be able to pic up the back issues of ME on e-bay, I have bought whole volumes for around £6-7

10/06/2009 17:50:10 |
You should be able to make the body with a form tool and just silversolder the neck on. Have a look at the following, although its an angled valve, straight ones ar not that different
BTW what engine are you working on, I'm doing MJ's 2" Fowler

Thread: RLE Engine |
09/06/2009 20:32:38 |
Its all fabricated with teh exception of the two 7" flywheels which are available from Stuarts. Mechanically its based on a "Zero-six" engine, the plans for which were published in Model Engine Builder Magazine but I did not like the "bar stock" look so made a few alterations inspired by the look of the Galloway Hit & Miss engines.
Some more pics of my engine http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v156/jasonballamy/Engineering/

Thread: Large Model |
09/06/2009 19:52:02 |
Would not be too hard to scale up another design, I've started drawing up a couple of Anthony Mounts models, one at 1 1/2 times and another at twice scale. The cylinders are not too hard to fabricate and there are suppliers of flywheels about such as this swiss company.

Thread: RLE Engine |
09/06/2009 19:46:19 |
I did see a post on another forum about a year ago that one of the ME traders had bought all of Alyn Foundries patterns but have not heard or seen anything since. In the end I built this from scratch with a couple of Stuart flywheels.
