Can anyone advise where I would be able to obtain castings ii gunmetal/bronze for miniature globe valves ? they are too expensive to buy these valves ready made so I would like to have a go at making my own. The body shape ie the problem in fabricating them. They are wanted for a 2" scale traction engine I am trying to get finished.

You should be able to make the body with a form tool and just silversolder the neck on. Have a look at the following, although its an angled valve, straight ones ar not that different

BTW what engine are you working on, I'm doing MJ's 2" Fowler

Many thanks for your informative reply,I will have to have a go at makingthem.
I am building Hainings 2" scale Ruston Light Steam Tractor, have been doing it for last 8 years on or off  & have reached the stage of the boiler fittings before I can steam it up. It runs ok on air. I am considering firing it with a gas burner, something like a Gaz camping stove burner. Any ideas on this??

Hi. I am also interested in some one-off small castings for a small 'Minnie' traction engine that I am making - 3/4" to the ft. I have made the patterns for sand casting for the chimney saddle and the cylinder. Are their any companies that do one-off castings?

I tried my local High School and would you believe it they have the complete kit, furnace, crucibles, sand, tongs, the lot, but the are not allowed to use it because of a Health and Safety edict from the local authority. So I am looking for some other source.

Try these

http://www.miniature-engineering.com/ does one offs and also some of MJ Engineerings castings

http://www.rgsengineering.net/ Cast his own 4" & 6" Fowler

Or have a word with Abbey who does lost wax casting

Having said that the cylinder needs machining on every surface so you could machine from the solid, I know of a 2" Minnie that was done that way from a block of Meehanite. The chimney saddle could be fabricated by turning the flange & splayed base then soldering this to a piece of plate bent to the outer radius of teh firebox. I've seen a 3" Fowler done this way and it looks better than the casting.

Thanks Jason. I think I might give MJ Engineering a try, but as you say it should be possible to machine from the solid, particularly for the scale that I have chosen. The parts are not very big.
