In the wilds of France, you can't call out the AA. It's a different system in France. Most, if not all, car insurance includes roadside assistance and recovery. In the event of a breakdown you just call the insurance company and they will send out someone from the nearest approved garage. It seems to work well. Russell |

I read just recently that modern camera lenses are no longer made with leaded glass and are the worse for it according to some.
There is an exemption to the EU Directive on lead relating to optical glass which reads, "lead in white glasses used for optical applications," (13(a) in EU 2017/1011 of July 2017). Russell Edited By Russell Eberhardt on 11/11/2018 11:36:41 |

Will the planet self regulate? As it warms up we will burn less fuel and nature will recover? Maybe?
Mike Unfortunately not. Heating only accounts for a small proportion of fossil fuel use. Russell |

Russell, what is the French name for Yorkshire fittings? I've not seen solder loaded ones but the plain copper ones would be "raccords à souder". They are normally silver soldered here, hence the easy availability of oxy acetylene gear in DIY stores. Russell |

It is not illegal to use lead bearing solder. The law prevents it from being sold or placed on the market - that means sampled or given away. It is very similar to the legislation forbidding the sale of cadmium bearing silver solders. After all, it emanates from the same European capital. I wonder if this is really true or if it is mis-interpretation by the HSE. Lead bearing solder is still on sale here in France in DIY outlets, both 60/40 and 50/50 alloy. Here is an example sold under a well known brand name: Russell |
Thread: For discussing the merits of alternative 3D CAD programs. |

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Onshape. While it can be a bit slow for really complicated assemblies it has the advantage that it is free and, as it runs within a browser, it works on Windows, Linux, and OSX. It is produced by an ex Solidworks team and I find it very easy to use having first learned 3D CAD on Solidworks about 18 years ago. Although I also have Fusion 360 installed Onshape is my goto program. Any other views on it? Russell |

Just had a read of the list in the regulations. Fortunately I live in France so I am not liable to 2 years in prison for possessing a lead acid battery in my car. It contains about 30% sulphuric acid. At least three of the listed products are available at DIY outlets and many supermarkets here! Russell |

My old workshop P4 computer is still running Windows XP, it is not networked or ever connected to the Internet and it's sole task is to run Mach 3 which it does nicely (I have plenty of backups, spare drives and power supplies). Any updates or useful machining tips are transferred via a USB stick. As Mach 3 indicated, it is best run on a dedicated system. Same here. It's been working fine for five or six years now with no updates. Russell |

Just downloaded and installed the latest big W10 update on my dual boot laptop. It took a whole day to install after downloading at night. Five or six reboots required, each time it booted into by favourite OS rather than W10 so I had to reboot again. Finally W10 was updated and working but responded very slowly to the keyboard. Another reboot and everything seemed OK, at least until I fired up Fusion 360. It failed to start as the system time was wrong. It hadn't remembered my internet time server settings. Told it to use the European pool rather than the Windows time server, rebooted once more and all was well. Why do MS make updates so difficult? When I update the Linux installation it takes minutes and works in the background with no reboots necessary. Russell |

Never understood why people have problems with parting off. Now we have insert parting tools it's a doddle, as they are made for power feed parting off. I usually set the lathe speed to about 500rpm to 800rpm and a medium speed feed and let it go. I have happily parted off 10" round bar with no problems. No doubt on a Super Adept lathe Russell |

! I live in the vienne about 30kms south of poitiers.Maybe it is modern day trend in leisure time that fewer people are hiding in sheds making things like they used to or is it a generation thing related to schools etc not teaching metalwork or similar skills for many a year? A few years ago there was an association MODELEXPO based near you in Neuville de Poitou. I think interests have moved away from pure metalwork to more general construction methods. There is a makerspace (FabLab) near us in Perpignan where non members can, for a small fee, use 3D printers, laser cutters, vacuum former, computers and an electronics lab. Not much metalwork other than hand tools. Russell |
