Thread: Here we go - parting off

No check for play something is flexing but I doubt it is the blade itself, if anything you should go thinner but have less sticking out of the holder.

Thread: Vertex BSO dividing head maintence
18/11/2011 18:05:16
Me and Vertex BSO dividing head have cut many clock wheels over the years but yesterday it let me down it was stiff and the wheel I was cutting was scrap.
So I decided to strip it down to see what the problem was well once in pieces I was pleased to find that the quality was very good and everything is adjustable.
The mesh of the worm to wheel is adjusted by removing the index plate loosening the two screws in the slots and turning the handle boss simple once you know how, end float is adjusted by loosening the small screw at the rear on the spindle boss and tapping the ring round then tighten the small screw again.

The reason mine was stiff it was because it was jamming the worm was only just making contact with the wheel, so if the handle boss oil pot is not vertical or to the right then it could be you need to adjust it for backlash.

Had I known this last night I would have a correct wheel and have saved myself an hour or two stripping and assembling my dividing head.

Thread: Stuart S50 drawings in metric
08/09/2011 20:33:23
Wow that would be great the reason I stopped making the S50 and reason I swore I would never make another Stewart Model was the use of fractions took all the joy out of it. so I will message you right away
Thread: cutting round bar
26/08/2011 18:20:29
I just had to cut a couple pieces of 22mm round BMS bar and I cut each one in under 55 seconds with just letting the saw do the work.
I use a Stanley 120110 Dynagrip heavy duty hacksaw with 18 TPI blade for cutting solid bar

Thread: Commercial projects???
24/08/2011 12:15:11
I have often thought that skilled men in sheds and garages are an under used resource that somebody could help them to supplement pensions with interesting useful work.
I have some idea and I am sure others have to but this is not the place for these discussions I guess.
Thread: cutting round bar

As with most things hacksawing by hand gets easier and faster the more you do it, the modern reinforced saws are really good I have one with 18 TPI blade for solid bar and another with 24 TPI for tube.
The thing to remember is let the saw do the work and not press down too much, if it takes a huge effort then your doing it wrong.
Thread: MEW 179

Thread: Turbocad 16
26/06/2011 09:01:03
I bought Turbocad 11 a few years ago because it was accepted by the British Horology Institute as I was doing their distance learning course at the time.
I had used Autocad at work so did not follow the tutorial and got in a complete mess but I had some drawings to do for the course so started again this time using the tutorial and it all started to make sense.
I have since upgraded to Turbocad 17 and would not use anything else now I think if you have used another package this puts you at a disadvantage as each CAD package has a different core mindset so you have to unlearn a lot of stuff to change packages.

Thread: Machining a block to have sides square to each other

Well if you can get hold of a angle plate and some G clamps it is quite easy otherwise using an end mill is the next easiest.

Thread: milling vices
12/06/2011 21:16:51
Well I can recommend the Emco machine vices not cheap though, but they are low profile and will last a life time.
Vertex ones are half the price and my Vertex dividing head is well made but I have no personal experience of Vertex vices
Thread: Tachometer.
12/06/2011 19:27:15
Well I bought a hand held laser one from Ebay direct from China for under a tenner including shipping works well enough although I found I had to colour the surrounding area black before it was reliable. So you need to fix the reflective tape (supplied) on a dark background maybe more expensive onse are less fussy.

Thread: How to dress a small diamond wheel
09/06/2011 15:45:04
On Ebay you can buy a diamond wheel dresser, how ever I have been unable to work out whether it is device for dressing diamond wheels or it is a diamond tipped device for dressing normal wheels.
So I would be interested in this thread as well.

Thread: More clock stuff
01/06/2011 18:28:29

I have made my own spring winder it is to John Wildings design modified so that I can use European style cylinder spring retainers, the best of both designs I think
You can see it in action on my website
But if you have a lathe you can also use that with a bit of fiddlerling

Well on my first home made clock I had made all the pivots too precise a fit and I had to open up all the holes the old adage "if it rattles it will go" proved true in my case. Although you may of adopted the modern trend of using mini ball bearings in which case disregard all I have said.

Thread: CNC XY Table for clock making no Z axis
20/05/2011 18:40:09
Thanks everybody some really great information and I am very grateful I am almost convinced but I have a serous paradigm to break but I suppose I have not lost too much if I have to upgrade the table at some point.
So John if you could give a little more info on your table conversion I would be very grateful.
Cheers Steve

Thread: New technology in Model Engineers Workshop
20/05/2011 11:27:41
I am not sure these modern "new technology" features are in the same league as the content that filled the older magazines, take CNC for example mostly they seem to take something already built that was never designed for CNC and bolt on some commercial motors and software. This does not seem to be in the spirit of the old time amateur modellers at all I suppose that now most ME/MEW readers are cash rich and time poor this new approach makes some sense, but for me the balance is wrong.
