Thread: How do i machine this ( on the wonk)

You need a lathe with a curved bed

Funnily enough I once bought a 4-jaw chuck from a man on Ebay which would probably have made a breeze of this job. The swine.

..Anyway, just out of interest, what's the make of the grinder? - it seems like a bit of a complicated manufacturing solution to a simple problem.

If you are serious then another 'food for thought' item are these pictures & descriptions of the of the origins of the BCA jig-borer; built like the Boley & Leinen with a plain compound table it doesn't get much simpler than this.

Thread: Design help for Myford style saddle stop

I wish I could claim my own ingenuity for that one, but I think it might have also have come from HH, or an article in MEW 'back in the day'..

Cutting the slot off-centre and using screws of different patterns are style innovations of my own however..

I'm afraid much of my own tooling is made 'for my eyes only'..

Another variation. Sorry 'bout the awful contrast.. ..a couple of collars so that you can insert calipers / pins / blocks between collar and body adds usefulness img_2073.jpgimg_2072.jpg

Nice; I enjoy these little 'Pittler' interludes, a machine with some interesting features. Thanks for taking the trouble to post, it's appreciated..

Thread: Removing a stuck chuck.

..never let the left hand engage the spindle drive before the right hand has told the brain that the chuck is fully home on it's seat..

Make a better one?

..the 'spring' action only has to retain it in the groove, so it isn't subject to rapid / repeated flexure..

..off the top of my head and without thinking to much about it, if I had to make one I might spend a couple of hours contemplating the concave base of an empty aerosol can..?

Thanks all for taking the trouble; it's always informative to see what you don't have the resources to experiment with yourself.

Try 'Conecut Taper Drill' as a search term.

Andrew, does your mill 'hammer' all the time whatever the cutter and conditions, or is it noticeably worse during some particular operations?

Does it ease up if you tweak any of the parameters?

Thread: Listening to my first AudioBook
01/01/2023 13:31:54

The 'Complete Ghost Stories of M R James' on CD in two volumes by Craftsman Audio.

Excellently read by David Collings - the clarity, pace, intonation, pronunciation, humour, & pathos are all that could be desired and could not in any way be bettered.

I winced at the price when I first bought mine but since then have listened to them over and over and over again; in this case the stories themselves and the way they are read provide such a nuanced whole that there is always something new to catch.. ..I've genuinely never got bored with them..

It would help if you could explain your test method in a bit more detail, Cedric; symptoms may have more than one cause and it'd be useful to narrow down or discount some of the possibilities.
