Often wondered where the term "Blue arsed fly" came from !! |
Thread: A useful safety addition to the drill press |
30/08/2018 11:45:12 |
Hell, have you guys got no sense of adventure ? What could be better than trying to work out where the job is heading, once it has taken off ? Works well,if you are a good dancer !! Still,a vise does come in handy,at times .! |
Thread: Cheap chinese Involute gear cutters |

Are those gear cutters any good ? Has anyone ever used them ? Might be interested in a set for myself All replies welcome. |
Thread: Where to get a part made? |
29/08/2018 18:48:48 |
Tony, Your experience does not surprise me. Many moons ago I needed to get some simple drill bushes made, and I got exactly the same response [I posted a post about this some time ago ]. I was told,in as many words to just "Piss off". Your best bet is to find some small guy locally, who would be able, and willing to oblige. Believe me,there is one out there somewhere. This is not a difficult job,so any small shop would be well able to do it Hell, even I could do it !!

Thread: Drill Press Buying Advice |
29/08/2018 09:51:07 |
I was amazed to see the amount of movement in that video. I have a similar machine and have never seen anything like that. Regarding 16mm holes,I think you might want to look at a somewhat bigger machine. In the meantime, you could use a simple sissors car jack under the table, easy to adjust and very stable. Might be no harm to check your drill bits too ! |

Thread: Recommendations for rust prevention? |
24/08/2018 20:43:41 |
Rust is like arthritis, and the man who finds the answer to one or the other, has his money made !! How do I know ? Ask me !! Try this, try that, try the other -------------? Next question please ? |
Thread: 9/20 lathe motor is failing. |
24/08/2018 19:56:12 |
As John said, these old motors are nearly bulletproof, most likely to be a cap problem,if so,just replace it,not that dear. |
Thread: Information/Help Please |
24/08/2018 10:41:45 |
The short answer is----NO. I have a wood mortiser somewhat similar, single phase induction motor, fixed speed. No easy way can that speed be changed, and even if you could change it,that machine would not be suitable for milling, for the reasons given by other Members. So,forget it !! |
Thread: Machine registry |
23/08/2018 15:33:51 |
What harm is there in a fellow setting up to make a few clubs or pikes or other useful objects ? Sure is that not what blacksmithing is all about ? I think it,s a grand way for a man to spend his time, better than holding up the wall anyway ! The bottom line is that a hammer can be used for many different purposes [and has been ]. Is a lathe any different ? These MP,s need to find something better to do,if indeed there is anything they can do ! |
Thread: Dormer centre drill grind - effective or defective? |
22/08/2018 17:51:29 |
I have bought center drills from Chronos and other suppliers and never came across one like that. Since it is Dormer, and priced as such,I would send it back. I suspect that this was just one that slipped through the net,but still,it,s no use to you. I think Dormer will be only too happy to replace it for you. |
Thread: Pilllar drill speed reduction |
22/08/2018 17:43:08 |
I must be one of the lucky ones ! I have a 20+ year old pillar drill 16 speed, with which I can drill 12mm holes,no problem, using a speed of around 500 rpm, sometimes higher,if I,m too lazy to change the speed. I also have a cheapy, cheapy bench drill from Aldi,5 speed,I think, which has no bother drilling 1/2" holes.,so I suspect that your belt is slipping,or just needs to be replaced. Now that I think of it,the belts on my 20 y/o have never been replaced. This machine can also handle 1" drills without slipping,so I would say check your belt first . |
Thread: Rotary Table |
22/08/2018 10:07:44 |
I had a similar problem with my table where I found that the spring clip did not always hold the arms in place,so I replaced it with a circlip. That solved the problem, but as has been said they are easy enough to make from a small piece of brass. I made a special sector arm when I found that I could not obtain one particular division using the existing arms [one of several mistakes I found in the tables ],so they are quite easy to make. |
Thread: How long to build? |
21/08/2018 19:16:36 |
If I ever had any ideas about building a loco, this post puts paid to it !!! After 25 years, how the hell do you remember what it was that you started out to build ? My span is about 2 days, and not always that !! |
Thread: Getting a Tormach off its pallet and base |
21/08/2018 19:12:24 |
It would appear that there is very little thought given by makers/suppliers as to how these machines will be handled when they arrive at their new homes. They are not toys and need to be treated with respect while being moved. Perhaps there is room here for a rethink. ? |
Thread: A Rant to our suppliers of drills |
20/08/2018 14:04:53 |
I have bought many drills from a supplier called "Drills UK,or UK Drills " [never remember which, grey cells gone rusty ] To date,I have not had any problems with them.No idea where they are made,China,I suppose, but they work. They are not in the same class as Dormer, but neither are they the same price, they seem to be rolled rather than milled, but for workshop use, they,re OK. Good range in Metric and Imperial although I dont recall seeing any number or letter drills on offer. Might be worth a try. |
Thread: Single phase electric motor ?Faulty |
20/08/2018 11:51:35 |
Paul, There may be nothing wrong with your motor,I have one the same type/make,fitted with a sanding disc, operating for the past 25 years or more. It aint broke,so I,m not going to fix it . |

Regarding your friend cleaning his flat so well,I too am very fussy,I clean up my house when it becomes difficult to get from one room to another. Life is too short to get hung up on things like that. People like that have a problem. |

Thread: when is a precision vice not a precision vice>? |
17/08/2018 12:04:58 |
David, Not sure I would agree with you all the way. I know "you get what you pay for" most times, but if an item is that bad that it is unfit for purpose,it should not even be offered for sale to begin with. No body expects to get tool room quality for small money, but at least the item should be usable. I think both of those Members had a reasonable complaint. Perhaps it,s too easy to be led astray by relying on a name or a maker. Look at it this way, there are cheaper ways of getting a doorstop ! PS Glad to see you are still around , I enjoyed many of your articles in the MEW over the years. |
