Thread: Turning a rectangular plate into a circular one
07/03/2022 19:05:15

I've just had to do this for my Half Beam flywheel. First cut the square as near round on the band saw.:8.jpg

Then fit to lathe. Mine is Chester Conquest. Which says maximum turning is 7" ie just over 177mm. This was only possible with the guard removed.

This has taken quite sometime and still needs the finishing touches.

I use clear nail varnish over the screw head, I can scrape it off and have new lenses fitted in the old frame...

Your lucky our optician says sorry can't use the old frame. It used to be OK up until the last 3 pairs. As one of the frames was sold as indestructible it really p??ed me off.

John's article was good but I found reading it with some dimensions in fractions and other in decimals a little off putting. Perhaps I'm getting too old.

I got mine in 1958 at Cardington. Can't find it now but that link showed it exactly as it was given to me.

Still plodding on although I seem to lack a lot of enthusiasm these days.

Just realized I have to make the base box before carrying on with the flywheel etc.

Thread: Advanced Grinding Rest
22/01/2022 20:51:27

Thomas.

Looking good.

I made the simple grinding rest and wished I'd made the advanced one.

I'm sure you will get a many hours of use from it. I made the Mill end and side holder which I've used a few times to hold round things on my mill but not yet sharpened an end mill on it. I have a problem with the height.

I do have the stops. Incidentally if you make it you might find the measurements for the drawbar are to long.

The display only lights up when the on button is pressed and the following are ok:

If either the emergency stop button, the micro switch on the guard are operated, the forward/reverse switch is in the 0 position or the fuse is blown will all stop the display lighting up and the motor starting. So it could be any of these.

Stuart

Agreed Sorry I was getting confused with my DRO display which is connected to the same outlet.

I was surprised when I removed my guard pivot to find the mill would run. the micro switch is made all the time when the guard pivot is removed.

Doh.

If the display isn't lighting up then it is most likely a fuse at the back of the control box.

Thread: Sets of parallels

Chris.

I made a set of parallels but then found I needed thinner parallels so bought a set of Precision Wavy Parallel 8pc Metric Set from Arc.... They get used all the time.

Thread: Over 70 Driving Licence Renewal
03/12/2021 21:20:27

At 77 Bucks council asked if I would like to take an older/mature driver assessment. I have never found any problem but thought what lovely idea. It cost £37 and is an hour long in your own car. The next year I was offered one free so I took it again.

As the lockdown sort of finished I asked and got another and at 80 being told I should wait 3 years before applying again was somewhat of a confidence boost.

It means being assessed by total strangers who aren't afraid to tell you how it is and give helpful tips.

One could argue it doesn't test you at night but as has been said already it does start to become obvious what the problems are. That is especially true of the people who love the high powered headlights and have no idea about when to dip.

I you have any doubts I would thoroughly recommend taking this assessment.

The marks around the edge look like a large Stilson has been used to turn it.

On my 2017 VMC, this is the speed sticker on the belt guard:

This is the pulley arrangement:

This is the speed table I constructed having measured each speed with a tacho:

As the highest speed is correct it might be you are suffering from belt slip at the other combinations.

My Dad used to make his own Acetylene in the early 50's and when he cleaned out the dregs it all went down the manhole in our drive. It never occurred to anybody that it would be a problem. I can't imagine how one would dispose of it nowadays.

Thread: Overheated Drill
31/08/2021 18:19:35

And you will find that all these drills are fitted with a 13amp fuse which means the the first thing to give up will be the armature. When I repaired them I used to put a fuse which suited the wattage of the drill.

This usually meant the fuse went the user then replaced it with a 13 amp fuse and then the drill ended up with a burnt out armature. That was 40 years ago but I doubt the are fitted with an overload device even now.
