Thread: What did you do today? 2023
19/04/2023 15:04:06

Had a morning at the now defunct Rolls Royce Aero Heritage Collection in Derby. They have donated several mechanical calculators & slide rules to my collection. They have a huge warehouse that is being used for storage of items waiting to be stripped for recycling or restored to any owners who lent them to the collection and may want them back. Anything left in this warehouse at the end of May next year is going for scrap. The building has been sold to Great Northern Classic cars who are going to repurpose it as a Classic car showroom & rebuild centre. Work on that project has already been started.

One very interesting item they are trying to rehome on a permanant loan or donation basis is this original Royce Ltd of Manchester (of Rolls Royce fame) 10 ton + 3 ton cross travel crane. Designed and built by Mr Royce himself. All the motors & controls are the original Royce design. Probably 15 metres or so wide. Up for grabs if anyone wants it for a workshope etc. It was being used up to the closure of the collection. They are trying to save it from the gas axe. Needs to be collected and dismantled if wanted. I have contact details if anyone is or may know someone interested. Can be viewed by appointment in Derby. A fabulous piece of history crying out to be saved and used.

Some picture of the crane below. Not too good as access was very difficult.

A picture of the main warehouse with the wife wandering back after a long walk to find some scissors. There are a couple more photos in my album.rr4.jpg

All the cardboard boxes are filled with many treasures. Many claimed but the lot of most to still be determined.

Unfortuanatly there will be no public sale of any items.

A nice piece of work. Very unusual. The owner should be proud.

Thread: Mitsubishi VFD question - single phase input possible?
29/03/2023 16:11:42

From looking at the manual it does indeed infer that single phase can be used. I have a couple of inverters that are fed through R & S but will also take 3 phase via R, S & T. They work no problem.

28/03/2023 16:30:22

I used the Nickerson Cold Blue on all the toolholders I made. Got pretty good results with it. Parts need to be very very clean. I warmed them up a bit till they were just hot enough to handle then duncked them in the solution till they looked about right. Then oil and wipe over. Look very good.

I got good results on another job after reusing the solution.

Chris. The seller can say "no returns" but if you report to YT as not as described you can still get a refund.

Distant selling regulations apply on YT so goods have to be fit for purpose.

250-100 designation is for BXA sized toolposts.

clipped from post elsewhere :-

The "A", "B", etc. type designation is Aloris sizing. Yuasa, Phase II, etc. use 100, 200, etc.

AXA = piston type = size 100 (2 1/2" wide, 14mm dia t-nut) = 1/2" tool bit, 3/4" boring bar = model 250-100 .

AX = wedge type version in size 100 = model 250-111

BXA = piston type = size 200 (3" wide, 16mm t-nut) = 5/8" tool bit, 1" boring bar = model 250-200

BX = wedge version of size 200 = 250-222

Thread: Warco Major mill wiring

Hello Stuart,

I know this is a long shot,But I noticed you have a Warco Major MD30B, Which is the same model I have and was just wondering if you could tell me how to tram the head? The only manual I could find was for a different model of Major which has two bolts to undo, Mine as far as I can see only has one large nut with a large chrome handle that you can undo to pivot the head or crank the handle to raise and lower on the rack and pinion. How does anyone know how these mills work? As I can't find any thing on you tube that specifically says what each handle, Bolt , etc does and the manuals are next to useless. Perhaps you could tell me a book that covers the use of this type of Round Column Mill.

I think tramming is only possible using shims under the column base plate.

Thread: Can a touring caravan be disassembled and then reassembled easily?
13/03/2023 10:26:10

Not possible. Even getting the awning rails off could be a nightmare. I have just done the awning rail seals & replaced the shower room wallboard in my 2007 Bailey 620/6 and that was bad enough. Caravans are glued and screwed together in a way that makes it very difficult to dismantle them.

Hi Michael. Here is a link to Boxfords Know your Lathe manual. I knopw it is much bigger that your little beauty but it has all the nonclementure for the parts of the lathe. This may help you in discovering more about yours and explain to others the parts you refer top. Good luck identifying your lathe.

BTW the link is to my Dropbox and is virus & malware free.

Dave. If you take the book to a charity shop explain its worth to them. Many charities have online auction sites where they list items of value so as to realize a bit higher income. As far as I recall registered charities have an arrangement where they pay no insertion or final price fees with many auction sites/companies.
