Thread: Anyone have a Clarke CL250MH (Sieg M1)
24/02/2019 19:51:09

You guys are probably right, solid bar might not be any better. Does anyone know of a good online supplier of 45mm diameter thick walled tubing?

Thanks, that helps a lot! Mine measures about 30cm so there's a good 4" missing. frown

I can get a replacement column from Clarke for a reasonable £17 but there's a 5 month wait! surprise I was considering buying a solid bar of the same diameter. It might even help improve the rigidity?

Thread: which mill

I would go for the VMC too! I have a variant, its a good solid mill. yes

Thread: Anyone have a Clarke CL250MH (Sieg M1)
16/02/2019 20:59:00

I've been slowly putting together my "indoor lathe" (axminster sieg c1) with the milling head (clarke cl250mh) but today I came across another problem.

As you can see the column has been cut down and is too short angry Could someone with the same mill measure the column length for me please?

Thread: Lathe Identification
16/02/2019 20:06:53

It looks in real bad shape but I've seen worse restored. We can fix anything us engineer types cant we?

It looks sorta 1930-1940 ish to me. I've seen something similar and IIRC it was American. Can't remember the name though. sad

Thread: Can it be cut - and still operate?
14/02/2019 21:10:24

I have one very similar to the one in the link I got from arc euro. I cut it down and all is fine.

Thread: Buying lathes direct from China
14/02/2019 08:57:20
Ive bought alot of smaller items from China over the years and had very few problems. However for something as large and costly as a lathe I wouldn't bother. It's not worth the hassle and risk IMO. There is plenty of good suppliers in the UK and obviously you will have atleast some after sales support. If you are looking to make savings why not try secondhand? There is lots of nearly new machines out there if you can find one locally.

Chester champion I think. cheeky

Thread: Aluminium black
10/02/2019 21:25:23

My experience with aluminium is that the surface oxidises really quickly, just minutes. If its a chemical reaction that is taking place then you need the aluminium to be "raw" You could try something like caustic soda to eat away the top layer and then try the blacking solution immediately after.

Good choice of lathe! wink 2 Its worth looking at local ads too, they sometimes turn up cheap!

Thread: Single phase verses 3 phase motor

Looks like you have already made your mind up but here's another vote for 3 phase. I converted my boxford a while back and it runs so much better now! yes

Thread: Motor for a Sieg X1 mill or (M1 attachment)
07/02/2019 14:41:43
Posted by Michael Cox 1 on 07/02/2019 11:22:00:

The motor that you picture on the Clarke milling attachment to the C1 lathe looks identical to the motor on my X1 mill from ArcEurotrade.

Since it is unlikely that you would need to use the milling spindle and the lathe spindle at the same time I suspect that the attachment does not have a separate power controller board and that it is run from the same controller as the lathe motor. Is there a socket on the back of the C1 that the attachment plugs into?

You appear to be correct. After a little bit more research the clarke cl250 lathe has a socket in the back for the drilling attachment to plug into. My lathe is the axminster equivalent and does not have the socket. After reading the information plate on the front of the attachment I assumed the motor was AC and that is how I tested it. No wonder it wouldn't run. smile o

06/02/2019 21:19:33

Hi yes thanks for that. I don't actually have the X1 mill though. I have the attachment for the C1 lathe below. It doesn't have the DC motor and variable speed so I would need both the motor and circuit board! About £200 all in. surprise I was wondering if anyone had successfully fitted some other motor? One from a small drill press perhaps?

06/02/2019 18:03:33

I picked up a milling/drilling head attachment for a C1 lathe recently but the motor seems to be kaput sad which is probably why it was cheap. Anyway I've noticed its based on the much more common X1 mill. Has anyone replaced the motor on theirs? if so where did you get it? Ive been toying with the idea of a slightly bigger more powerful motor but I would probably need to replace the gears with metal ones? any thoughts?

Thread: Double mag purchase..

How come I only got 1 mag and it cost me £4.50 then? sad

What issue number is the "back to back"? bought MEW today (240) no freebie? And it's more than £3.60?

I would also recommend "the amateurs Lathe" book. Also you might find the link below useful. It's a series of videos put together by MIT for begginers. I found it useful when I started out. The lathe specific stuff starts around video 8 I think.

Saw it too. Amazing! I want it! Hell I'd settle for the little tool kit.

Thread: Best mini grinder bits
26/03/2016 10:54:14

You want the orange aluminium oxide grinding wheels. Forget the cheap ones get the proper dremel branded ones. They last about 4-5 times longer. I like the 952 cone shape best.
