I will be there, there will have to be road blocks if anyone wants to stop me! Neil Pleased to hear that Neil. What is your organisation doing to support exhibitions? Maybe you are supporting MMEE2022? Am I right in saying you have phased out your own exhibition and there's no sign of another? Maybe you are banging down somebody's door to hold an exhibition but I can't see it.

The last few times I was at MEX I was helping on a society stand so although there on two full days plus the setting-up day, still had a long weekend's camping fees. Luckily I found a basic but good enough camp-site for very reasonable cost at Harbury only a few miles away, but my round-trip from home is about 300 miles. It is just about within day-visit range for me if I attend on only one day. I regret to break the trend of a list of costs to get to Leamington from various parts of the country but.... I sense that feeling to be a great deal stronger now and why bother to have the hassle and inconvenience of organising and running a stand? Does anyone really appreciate the fact? I think most clubs will have a hardcore of the same few people who do things, but they are getting less. Isn't it the case that the clubs are getting less interested and traders realise it's not worth them doing either. I live within 25 miles but find it difficult to muster enough interest to go. It is mainly the same old stuff, the clientelle is generally very rude - rucksacking and barging, apart from the fact some of them want a good wash!

It’s not just a lathe, it’s got a milling attachment a gearbox a dividing head and a load of tooling, doesn’t matter if you think someone’s daft paying that amount for it, lots of people consider it daft to buy Chinese rubbish Most probably about time all the armchair engineers on here stopped bitching about what lathe is best and got out into their workshops and made something with whatever machines they have got. Just my opinion. Yup, can't say fairer than that! |

ON the other hand, if they did not charge for hospital parking these days, the car park would be chock full of local businesses' employees enjoying free all-day parking and many hospital visitors would miss out on a park at all. Mr. Hopper, I think you've been taken in by the incompetent ramblings of administrators Jeff Dayman talks about. I have seen them put up this argument, which, on the surface appears logical. EXCEPT - even I could set up a system which ties parking to appointments. I know admin people are notoriously poor at admin, but they could, if they wish, have this kind of system. Please lets not hear the NHS is short of cash and is in dire need of the parking cash! There's enough grief in going to hospital without stress created because parking may overrun or you do not have change. |

Snip....On coal (as a fuel for heritage railways etc), am I being thick - is there a law saying you cannot mine coal anymore? If not - there is a demand, import costs are high - we've still got plenty, so why aren't entrepeneurs looking at modest mining again? With modern technology and methods I would have though a limited small-scale 'industry' would be viable. With the amount of use we are talking about, the amount of CO2 etc would still be minute compared to everything else being belched out. I fully endorse the efforts to reduce such pollution but still think that we are talking about such a tiny, insignificant amount in this context. Yup. Agree. Sense of proportion needed. The media and Westminster bubble will be saying we have abandoned net zero when/if we start mining coal in Cumbria. Who will have the balls to biff them round the ear and tell them to shut up - we would be keeping our world going whilst moving towards net zero without crippling ourselves in the short term? |

Anthony, I have had the same B&D version that you have, bought ours many years ago and it has given sterling service, has carried 500 kilos at times and still going strong. You may think it is crap but I looked around for a potential replacement when it finally gives up but versions on the market now are crap in comparison, I think I will give ours a repaint and overhaul. Dave W Dave, good to hear. They do come up on ebay |

Not as slimline but a lot cheaper and could add handles at either end if wanted. Able to move a wm280 lathe and a wm18 mill not at the same time. Also much cheaper. And British made Nice one. |

I have (and prefer) the Draper 3-in-1 heavy duty sack truck. The OP showed a truck which is a nice little jobby, which will no doubt be useful for many - who want something light and most of the time no great weights are involved (most of the time for me). That said, like ndiy, I liked the idea of a sack truck which could be used horizontally. I bought the B&D version, now out of print, presumably because nobody else liked it! Cheap and nasty - but very useful for me - maybe not for you.

Begs the question what should a model engineering magazine smell of? I'd like it to be a 50:50 mix of Welsh Steam Coal smoke and hot oil. Definitely shouldn't smell of either Teen Spirit or Old Fart! Dave And will other magazines catch on. |

I had a friend who came from Scunthorpe. Sometimes it is better to use a word which people recognise and understand. Surely programmers are clever enough to make something which does not just search for a string of letters, but then checks the context. OK, you're never going to find them all, but it could eliminate most of the Scunthorpe effect. I'm making up some pipes today - just going to search for some nipples. Britain's nuclear submarine commanders are allowed to launch their Trident missiles in the event they can't hear BBC Radio 4 on 198kHz. Low frequency radio not only has long distance ground wave, it penetrates underwater too. A submarine can detect BBC Radio 4 almost anywhere in the North Atlantic without surfacing and revealing it's position. Unfortunately, the BBC has many enemies working hard to kill the institution. Be ironic if lefty comedians were stopped from pointing out political blunders and sleaze due to a "don't bother me with mere details" enthusiast not understanding what the Archers is really for! Most of what you say is true about LF being received underwater. Regret to distort a good story with facts but, communication with submarines is nothing to do with Droitwich Radio 4. If there was no R4 LF, we would lose only the shipping forecast, Morning Service and cricket. All are available from other sources. |

Posted by Nigel Graham 2 on 08/04/2022 23:30:09:
The cm is not a "Preferred Unit" - as engineers we all know it should be metres and millimetres except in a few specific applications. Why? 'Cos the ISO says so. Though I don't condone it - mathematical neatness does not always make for day-to-day practicality. I have another reason for not using cm, but cannot explain why. We seem always to arrive at a midway no-mans land - only half changed over. No matter how hard we all try to go totally metric - it seems to be impossible and we have to convert between systems. They said go centigrade (now called Celsius), and I did, and got used to it and it became natural. Then F still appears and I have to convert. |

Posted by SillyOldDuffer on 07/04/2022 15:08:20: Snip.... Now it turns out they've dodged part of the bill and are being subsidised by the rest of us! Might write to my MP suggesting any customer returned to British Gas by a failed supplier should pay the full cost of their failure to choose a sound supplier in the first place. I don't see why existing customers should bail out anyone who chose to take a risk on sexy gas prices. What next? A scheme for refunding people who lose money betting on horses? Failed companies of this type aren't worth much because they're bankrupt and don't have many assets. They're administrative entities with a small staff and a computerised billing system, likely operating with leased equipment from from a leased office. Retailers don't extract gas, or store it, or own any pipes. They manage buying and selling gas, but it's paperwork rather than a solid business. (More likely computers rather than paper!) Dave I have been transferred to BG, my supplier having gone bust. I find your bigotted statements interesting, and look forward to an explanation as to how you are subsidising me. Rik. you forgot Happisburg (Haisborough) and Whymondham (Windham). Since you are all being pedantic - could I possibly point out you're only thinking of the Wymondham in Norfolk. I think the one in Leicestershire is pronounced properly (wyemundum) Yes, the Angela Rippemoff version of guerillas was indeed stupidity. |
