Have just received my copy of MEW No..316 but have been knocked over by the smell of mag! Change of ownership, Change of printing materials? Why is it not possible to leave well alone.

Just settled down to read my copy which arrived earlier but I can't detect any strange odour. Phil

Hopefully, it's the sweet smell of success! No pong from my copy, either!

I find all modern printing inks are horrible. I have to leave the copies for a while or else I just start coughing. I am also allergic to newsprint as well as what the Journalist write!

My inkjet ink smells fishy when it is still damp.

Did the cat get to it first?

Can you post the smell here so we can check what it is?

A lot of modern inks are soy-based. Does it smell like soy sauce?

.In the absence of a smell-ometer and a lack of any firsthand experience of soya I am not in a position to provide much more information but if anything, I would describe it as being more industrial solvent like than food based. The smell has now largely worn off but it was all powerful when first removed from its wrapper and instantly noticed by other members of the family. As an aside it is quite apparent that the cover is a glossier product than previous issues and presumably is the source of the odour.

Sounds like it was the solvent in the ink not fully dried out before packaging up in plastic. Most likely being printed on a new (as in different) press along with new owners Morton's other mags. New newspapers "hot off the press" smell like that. I always loved that smell at 1 o'clock in the morning when I worked in the industry.

Begs the question what should a model engineering magazine smell of?

I'd like it to be a 50:50 mix of Welsh Steam Coal smoke and hot oil. Definitely shouldn't smell of either Teen Spirit or Old Fart!
