The Nicholson File Company has been producing guides to the use of files since at least 1878. Here are links to both one of the earliest and one of the latest versions of their guidance.
These tables complement the article "Universal Thread Cutting on a Mini Lathe" by Neil Wyatt in Model Engineers' Workshop issue 204.
This 'Victorian' Port Pourer appeared as a free plan and 3 1/2 page article in issue 3 of MEW, winter 1990. If nothing else it proves that Stan Bray was willing to experiment with the range of topics covered by the magazine!
The purpose of this program is to assist in the measurement of screw threads by the 'three wire method' of placing three wires of the correct size across the thread to be measured, two on one side and one on the other, in the 'V' of the thread and measuring across the wires with a micrometer. Bill Perrett of Southampton DMES wrote a history of 25 years of model railway passenger car development. It appeared in Model Engineer between December 1987 and July 1988. Subscribers Only
The rear tool holder, for multiple operations or rear parting off is not credited on the plan. I believe it was designed by Stan Bray who was the original editor of the magazine. It appeared in the autumn 1990 issue of MEW.
This simple but effective low-profile rotary table, designed by T. Daish, appeared in the summer 1990 issue of MEW.
Over the first few years following its launch in 1990, MEW regularly included a free pull-out plan. These plans covered a diverse range of tools, from a filing rest to a simple lathe.
Today I enjoyed a busy day the the Harrogate exhibition. I'd like to thank Lou and Gavin Rex for their warm welcome. It was great to meet so many readers of MEW and the forums, as well as many of the traders. Sadly, I didn't have the time to get round everything or everyone. Brian Wood's article on the above topic in MEW 212-213 was exceptionally well received. It appears to have caused a national shortage of the 34T changewheels on which many of his gear combinations depend!
