In 1952 the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Model Engineer Exhibition.
Many readers will be familiar with the Duke of Edinburgh trophy, a hotly contested award competed for by previous Model Engineer Exhibition medal winners. This visit, in the year of the Coronation, was what inspired the Duke to set up the trophy.
