You could do worse than look at the series reprinted here:

Passenger Comfort and Safety

It details the construction of a 5" driving truck.

Neil,

Attempting to access that article displays "Subscriber only content" even though I am a subscriber to both ME and MEW with the appropriate subscription numbers entered in my profile, and anyway wouldn't of course be of too much help to Deltic if he is not a subscriber

Dear Mr. Needles & Pinza,

"A Versatile Driving Truck" by Alan Bibby, Model Engineer January 30, February 27, March 27, April 24, and May 22, 1998 is a driving truck which is quickly convertable for 5" and 7¼ ground level and 5" raised track. By that I mean it can do them all. It has disc brakes and is two axle.
It is worth a read - no reason why you could not just use some of the ideas and do your own thing from the basic outline. Regards, MELD.

Hi Clivel

I took the liberty of emulating your account (you will now have to log back in) and had no difficulty accessing the article.

There have to be SOME benefits to being a subscriber!
