Homebush TurbineOur annual open days are on 17th Nov, and 1st Dec this year, bring the family along, there are large gardens to explore for thos not interested in machinery.   The photos are of our turbine, the one below shows the wooden toothed bevel gear (on the vertical shaft), running on the cast iron gear,  Origional teeth, nearly 140yrs old.

Hi Ian,

Originally from Ngahinepouri, now Melbourne, I often travel to Chch

to the RNZAF Museum to do research work, I have heard of the

Homebush open days and would like to see this turbine display.

Some years ago we used to coat the Cast turbines with Belzona

at the Hydro stations, so have a bit of an interest.

So What is the location of the place to google and GPS it ?

Dave.

Here we go, I'll have a go at a link to a web site with a map. Go west to Darfield, then as you go out the western end of town you will see a sign pointing to the left, this is high way 77/ Bangor Rd follow that, we put up signs the other day.

Hope the event goes well, I visited my daughter in Chch in 2010 before the big shake and it was frightening to see the damage. I often wonder how the Canterbury model railway is surviving as many of the shakes are centered in their vicinity.I was always impressed with the friendliness of the people there and in NZ generally.

Sorry Neil.

Terry, they seem to be OK over there. There was a big rail week last week, 150 year anniversary of passenger rail in NZ, starting with a broad gauge track in Christchurch. The trams in Christchurch are due to restart this coming week, after 3 years off the tracks. Ian S C

dsc00715 (640x480).jpgWe had a good, interested crowd today. We didn't run the Turbine today, had to fill a hole in the penstock, used JB Weld, by the next open day on the 1st Dec. it should be well cured. Ian S C

We had a good day last Sunday, and hope for a repeat, or better next Sunday 1 / 11 / 13, it's sort of show time here in Canterbury around this time of year. Ian S C

We had a good day on Sunday, first run of the Turbine didn't happen, it was seized solid, an hour or so later, after a bit of muscle power we managed to get it to move, so it was set up and it ran OK, and my epoxy patch on the penstock held. Ian S C
