Thread: Crawford Collets
30/10/2022 09:34:20

Many thanks DC31k. That ebay link look just the ticket. I would need a D1-8 backplate presumably. Does anyone know how the collet chuck mounts to the backplate, - looks very much like it is a threaded mount.

Hi Jason theres a link to the holder in my previous post. I have asked them for more info but Have just realised its a Burnerd (or the say it is) holder. I chose it becuase its the only D1-8 I could find. I will keep hunting for someone selling a D1-8 collet chuck and collets.

29/10/2022 19:59:56

Perhaps I have misled you Michael, - all I want is collets to fit the chuck and the chuck to fit the lathe D1-8 Camlock. I have given up trying to replace things exactly as was. This is a chuck that would seem to fit the lathe. I have emailed them to ask if they have a serial number or collets to suit. How I get the 14" 4 jaw thast on there is a different matter.

Whilst all of the catalogies mention a vast range of old British lathes (Herbert, CVA etc) they dont mention DSG.

29/10/2022 18:11:56

The lathe resided in Middlesborough Technical COllege for its whole life, and I was lucky to get it (by way of a dealer) from there. I am not too fussed about the grip range of the collets but obviously they need to fit the chuck.

I continue to restor a DSG 17T tool room lathe. See figure. It was ordered with a Crawford `collet chuck and 29 collets. The Camlock on the lathe is D1-8. I have found on ebay a D1-8 Crawford Collet chuck. Can anyone tell me what size or type of Crawford Collets I need please.

Thread: gears for hand winder

That F1B is amazing. The nose mechanism is a masterpiece of miniature engineering.
thanks for your kind offer Tug. Pm sent.

Thanks Ramon, that is the best book about building planes. Still very relevant. I will message thank you very kind.

Emgee you are right, a bit like a modified hand drill though they are for outdoor free flight where the ‘motor’ is much thicker braided rubber. This is for the much more delicate indoor. Here’s a commercial one - $395.

John - need the torque feedback, - so not if you want to know how tight your rubber is.

Cheers Jason and Noel. I have found exactly what I need on beltingonline.

17/09/2022 09:07:31

I want to make a 10:1 winder for rubber powered model planes. The recommended gears are 12,24, 48 and 60 teeth.

I want it to last (even though it could be overkill am happy w EN8 gears).

What would be the best gear material and where to buy ?. I don't want to make them.

Thread: drilling tool steel

cheers old school.

01/09/2022 23:21:31

I wonder if it’s piano wire ..

01/09/2022 22:18:47

Its a cross hole and a brand new dormer drill wouldnt touch it so i think it will need annealing.

01/09/2022 21:40:24

I need to drill a 40 thousandths hole in a piece of 1/16 piece of silver steel. The hole dimension isn't critical. Presumably I need to anneal it but any pointers to colour and length of time and treatment afterwards greatly received.

Thread: Lathe light
20/09/2020 08:05:30

Good tips thanks. Points taken about 240 volt conversion and safety issues. The bulb fitting is bayonet (which I could easily change) so I have with this , looks like it will be a while coming from the east.

19/09/2020 22:30:36

I am restoring a DSG lathe. I thought the light had long since been disconnected. After blowing very fuse in the machine ( pump wiring contacting chip tray .. 415v) I had to replace them all and found that the light had 36 volts so I have painted it.

I now need a 36 volt bayonet ( Standard B22 I think) bulb, preferably bright and led. Failing that converting to led within the shade. I want o keep the original light as I am hoping to keep the lathe as original as poss. Any recommendations where I can get a bulb?
cheers

Thread: insert identification
06/05/2019 16:48:41

No box. No they are brand new and it's just my rubbish photography. Many thanks, yes they look very like the ISCAR catalogue. Related tool comes up with a range of tools but none for 3mm. Will keep searching.

06/05/2019 16:08:38

These inserts were sold by ebay chap as Iscar. I am looking for a holder. They are 3mm wide and have absolutely no markings.

They are double ended and one end is upside down wrt the other.

I have spent a lot of time with Google to no avail. Can anyone identify them?

It is indeed a pocket microscope, the bevelled end for letting light in is the giveaway.

Looks a great refuge Ron. If you can ignore the snarky comments This Old Tony seems to be doing a series on the Minilathe. The second one on bearings is good.
