Myford ML7 Quick change tool post

Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a quick change tool post for a myford ML7. I have come across quite a few posts praising the rdg tools quick change tool post, but has anyone any experience of the one from warco:

It looks awfully similar, but is £10 cheaper.

I'm also planning to try grinding my own from tools from HSS stock. Would 8mm or 10mm be preferable for these tool holders?

I have noticed that some people use Allen type grub screws on their Dickson type tool holders, I have changed some of mine and this does tidy up the tool holder, I think it is worth using screws of a length so that the socket is supported by the toolholder and hopefully stop the socket breaking if over tightened.

As anyone purchased from the company that made the Myford QCTP A&R Precision in Coventry believe ?

Yes, I have, and I am perfectly happy with them; it seems that A&R were the original suppliers to Myford of Beeston anyway, so they ought to know what they're doing.

I've had some dodgy ones from other sources too, but I have managed to bodge them to fit by attacking them with carbide tools.

Yes I agree with Nigel, I always now buy mine from A&R, and have ail ways been pleased with there quaility

I have seven toolholders sitting on my bench from two different suppliers, none of which properly fit my (Bison) toolpost.

I didn't realise they didn't fit until I needed one but milling 1mm off the rear faces fixes the issue of the cam tightening up the holder.

I have had a couple I believe were from A&R, these fitted perfectly.

I understand that the original manufacturer of the QCTP for Myford was Weston Engineering, hence the early versions were stamped with a W which some people thought was an upside down M for Myford. It appears that in later years A&R had this contract.

I bought a toolpost and holders directly from A&R some time ago and I am very pleased with my purchase, the original Myford and A&R holders fit perfectly.

I agree with the others regarding A&R Precision. Forget the foreign-made toolposts - there are too many tales of interchangeability problems and faulty parts. Go for the genuine British A&R product which is beautifully made and no more expensive. They are made in small batches and sold on eBay. They were stopped by RDG from using the Myford name anywhere in their adverts, even though they were the supplier to Myford before the Beeston factory closed.

As Jon says, they are still in business and in fact were selling the rear version of the toolpost up at a week or so ago.

I have found the same.

There is also movement between the main body and the holders.

I will use the expression "Buy cheap, buy twice." Which is what I will end up doing, so these have worked out quite expensive.

When I have saved coinage I will be replacing the system and ebay it.

We at the evening glass made are own tool holders and I'm sure they could be made at home in the workshop.. Not so difficult, to get the angles correct we milled out the "slot" where the lathe tool will eventually will be held, then drilled and tapped the 4 holes 2 BA. I bought from the auto jumble sale half of a broken VEE block which after a bit of machining became the clamping jig. The milled out slot was clamped to the jig by the 4 screws, now all angle were correct for milling the rest of the tool holders. Once that part was completed the centre part was milled away and with great care a tee slot cutter was used. Initially we had a couple of failure but soon got into production. We used free cutting mild steel, I'm sure bought one will be hardened and ground finish but these home produced ones have stood the test of time Ok. Ted

I have some Chronos toolholders which are a fit on my genuine Boxford QCTP, and they are fine.

However these were bought as an end of stock clearance, (on the basis that if they didn't work I hadn't wasted too much cash) so their latest offerings may not be the same quality.

For Myford I would use A&R Precision.   A good fit on my Toolmex tool post.

I see that they have no QCTP's or holders for sale at the moment which is a bit of a pity.

If it helps this was the situation when I was searching for mine. I sent A&R an ebay message and asked if they would contact me when they next had some available. Sure enough I received an email notification within a few weeks and was able to buy a set, along with extra holders.
