I renewed my magazine subs to MEW a couple of weeks ago online but my expiration date hasn't changed from this December, and my money has been refunded to my account.

I've tried phoning but can't gat a reply.

Thread: ARC Facemills
21/06/2020 16:25:15

I've had it for months but just tried my ARC Euro 3MT 25mm indexable face/endmill on a bit of old black bar.

Very impressed, cuts like butter and a lovely finish (usual disclaimers)

Starting to think that cemented carbide isn't that bad after all wink

I made this out of an old pistol drill, I fitted the epicyclic gearbox in the steel block, the motor is in the old spice container.

Hi Colin,

I'm afraid not, the bits are still sitting on the bench. Work seems to be getting in the way of everything these days sad

My advice ( again as others mention ) is to save further for a good collet setup first.

I agree, my ER32 collet set would definately be higher up on the list than the 4Jaw SC if I was buying again.

I would appear to be in the minority.

I use mine a lot, in fact I can't remeber the last time I took it off the lathe except for using my ER32 collet chuck. It's only a 4" job but is consistently accurate to within 0.03mm, more than good enough for my meagre skills blush & I've never noticed any issues with holding round stock.

Thread: Sending of heavy items
08/04/2019 17:35:03

I very recently went to order an endmill from a well known supplier and the postage at the checkout has now gone up to £10 postage (£5 for the cutter) so I didn't bother. (£3 a month ago)

Reminds me of the time I ordered an air tool and was quoted £30 postage as 'Your destination is very expensive to send to'. I paid as I needed it.

Was not impressed when it turned up in a small box with a £2.40 franked label on it.

I've had one for a few years now (bought from the 'old' Myford) and prefer it to the handwheel. Mine has a friction collar graduated in MM and sliding stop at the rear with a locking screw. It's a bit of a pain having to use a knocking bar to eject tooling, especially as I'm short of room to the right of the lathe, but I've been meaning to make up a combined drawbar/ejector to get over this (the bits for this are sitting on my bench, have been for four years blush  )

Thread: Old Printer Parts

Thank you Gents, the piece I have is beautifully straight and round, almost a shame to chop it up, but I'll give it a whirl over the weekend and see how it goes,

Gents,

Many moons ago, in a previous existance, I used to repair large scale printers as part of my job and accumulated some bits which I thought wpould be usefull.

Fast forwarding 35 years to the present day I've found a piece of stainless rod just the right size for my next project. Thing is has anyone any idea what grade it might be, and if indeed any of it's worth keeping?

Paul

Apoligies for being way too late now but I had the same issue with a 'pack' of 5 holders. Had to machine off some of the faces as above to make things fit.

I'd had them sitting around for a couple of years hence not sending them back, but cost a few carbide tips to make things ok, but really speaking I shouldn't have needed to do anything in the first place ?

Thread: Myford Super 7 binding spindle

I went around the houses doing this only to find the motor to countershaft belt tension wasn't tight enough and the belt was slipping (not that I could see it though, had to touch the motor pulley to confirm).

Jason,

Those ones in the picture from APT are identical to the ones I have for aluminium.

OK Gents,

Very un scientific test on a piece of rusty black bar.

Left hand side was the inserts for aluminium, 10 thou depth of cut at 1000 rpm, hand fed. Any more than 10 thou and the vibration was awful and you could tell it was cutting unevenly by the sound. What I wasn't expectiong was the right hand side, same speed feed and depth but with inserts for steel. The faster you fed it the better it seemed to like it, even at a 40 thou depth of cut. It sounded fine but I know that the cutting teeth vary in height.(BTW my mill is a RF30)

The steel inserts were APMT1604PDER-M2. I didn't get the inserts with the facemill but I noticed that there seem to be two flavours available, both in grade VP15-TF. One is -M2 and the other -H2. From what I can find the H2 is for medium to heavy cutting and the M2 is for medium to light, they certainly seem to have a sharpish edge to them.

I've got one of these Banggod cutters but haven't used it in anger yet after having read everyone else's experiences.

The insert height originally varied by 16 thou which I managed to decrease to about 8 by swapping/changing the inserts. I have a good quality 3mt arbor which fits my Mitsubishi face mill snugly but is a 'loose' fit on the Banggood job like Jason found.

When I bought it I also got some inserts for aluminium, these are razor sharp as the now dried blood on them testifies and also the height difference is now down to 1 1/2 thou. I'm tempted to try these on steel and see what happens (I use the aluminium turning inserts on mild steel and they work a treat).

If i can find my camera battery charger I'll post a pic later.

I've developed a taste for sherry as I've gotton older, I'm afraid the shelf life here is about 3 days embarrassed
