Drip Tray Myford ML7 - Fabrication

Hi

I'm just in the process of restoring a 1957 Myford ML7. It doesn't have a drip tray, but my father has a large suitable sheet of steel that would be ideal to use to fabricate our own one.

Does anyone have a cutting 'pattern', or measurements of the Myford drip tray in order to make our own? and does anyone know of any article published on the internet that shows one being constructed.

any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Mike

Does it have to be a copy of the Myford tray?

I just got the local metal supplier to cut me a rectangle of aluminum alloy approx 40" x 14", notched out the corners and bent the sides up at 45 deg. Bit of caulking at the corners and a coat of paint (not strictly necessary) and it's been fine.

Could be done in steel if you want, but harder to work and Al doesn't rust.

Mike,

I can measure my Super 7 octagonal drip tray if you want but as Sid says - you could choose an easier method. For example, I did have a Myford ML10 lathe. I simply bolted the lathe down to the bench and surrounded it with 4 strips of 1" black steel angle to form the drip tray. A bit of silicon chaulking and away you go.

I'm happy to measure mine if nobody comes up with drawings.

Luckilly for you im am taking the lathe off as part of my leveling efforts over the weekend so I should be abe to get a good view of things.

Saying where are you based might help.

Hi Mike, don't know if it's any help, but I needed a tray for my ML7 and a mate told me he'd seen some Land Rover drip trays stencilled '5 SQN' in our local army surplus shop, Anchor Supplies in Ripley and Nottingham. I went and looked at them, 4' X 2' X 1/8th" steel, only £9.50! Ka-ching, thank you sir!

Regards,

John.

Thanks guys, I wasn't expecting such quick replies.

Sid - I must admit, that was what we were contemplating, however I must also admit that by the time I finish restoring the Myford (see I'm already thinking positively), it will hopefully be nice and shiny...and well, I just thought that even if I can't stretch to a Myford drip try...it will at least look like one. Sounds silly I know, but I've seen those amazing photos of restored Myfords and I thought 'that's what I want'. So I have an image of what I want it to turn out like, hence why I want to try and replicate the Myford tray.

Phil & Chris - I would really appreciate that. I have no access to a Myford and I'm new to all this, so I can't get any measurements from anyone else. I did see an article in MEW, but as usual didn't take a note of the issue for when I wanted to get back to it!!! However I have now found it again (issue 160,' installing a Myford' p34). It looks to me like the 5 sides of the tray bed at one end are made up of 45deg angles with the edges also behind bent up at 45deg. I live in Chertsey, Surrey.

Oldmetaller - that sounds good, alas I live down here in the South. Fortunately we have a large sheet of steel that came from a table at a engineering firm that my brother worked at when it closed down when everything went to China.

Thanks again to everyone for your help, it is really appreciated.

kind regards Mike

Mike

Why don't you give Myford a call or use the email contact service they seem exceedingly helpful and quick.

Draw a rectangle 13.5" x 40.5", draw across each corner at 45 degrees with          4" (x & y ) direction. To each side add 2" wide strip, notch corners, bend up at 45 degrees, weld corners. You will need to sort out where to drill for the hold down bolts. Do not forget that you will need raising blocks to lift the bed feet clear of the tray, these also include the levelling screws.

All dimensions taken from genuine Myford Tray, if you want to drain away coolant you will need a drain hole, usually at the end.

Brilliant, thanks so much for that Kwil, exactly what I was after and thank you for taking the time to measure it for me.

Hi Chris, I tried to ring Myford the other day (and ask some other questions), but apparently their technician wasn't back until next week I believe.

Thanks again.
