![]() 879 forum posts 34 photos | There was a thread in a forum which I am trying to track down which mentioned a material that you could dampen and mould around the boiler or pipes I should have taken a note of it but as usual did not. I remember it saying builders merchants but went in and someone built like a ***** door said duh (just like homer) end of enquiry.
So can anyone remember what the material was !!!
Would help me greatly
Have a good christmas and new year |

![]() 879 forum posts 34 photos | Hi Thank you Tony for your input but this is not what I want I am building a 5"g B1 and need a lot of the stuff. As I said this was a material that could be dampened and moulded around boilers and pipes you will note that I am involved with these posts already.

Recently I had to design a domestic fire place and contacted a fire brick supplier. This company also supplied the foundary and furnace industries
The company had a range of materials for "casting" a fire protective layer.....Some materials were "Air set" while others were heat set. They also had various kinds of matting both flexible and rigid.
I live in Melbourne Australia so the following link may not help you; but it may assist in helping you where to look. and what to ask for.
If you search for "Fire brick" in your location you may find another?

![]() 7468 forum posts 230 photos | There was a thread in genral questions sect of Model Engineer Clearing House a few months back, I think it was about a Tich built by Paul? I think, that might set you in the right direction, it was some sort of hi-tech paper. Ian S C |

324 forum posts 63 photos | Hi Springbok, Have a look at Vermiculite cement. A 6:1 mix with portland cement is used as an insulating filler in firebacks. http://www.fornobravo.com/forum/f28/tip-mixing-vermiculite-concrete-3793.html Depending on your thick ness you might need to mod the ratio but vermiculite is on ebay and should be in DIY and garden centres as it also doubles as a soil lightener. On ebay there is also ready made thin board which might suit your needs Good hunting Bob D |

Kaowool Blanket or Kaowool paper is the stuff that is usually recomended which should be available from builders merchants or insulation specialists, but I don't know how big the pack size is. Blackgates list it in their catalogue per square foot.
Weldaguard from insulation specialists is another option.
There's also carboard from cereal packets built up to thickness.

795 forum posts 34 photos | Springbok....I am currently experimenting with ceramic fibre and fireclay cements. I have had a bit of success soaking the fibre in the cement mixture and then moulding it to shape. It goes quite stiff and stays in position. Pottery suppliers are the people with good knowledge of this subject. The materials are relatively cheap and the ceramic fibre is available from ME suppliers. Chronos used to do it and Polly I think. If you think that this would be of use to you and want names, leave a PM for me and I will try and sort them out.

883 forum posts 11 photos | Hi Mick Just looked at the site Dave highlighted above as interested in this type of material for a kiln/furnace lining. Scroll down the page (a long way) until you come to a box on the left hand side headed "Information". In the box is a heading "Contact us" click on that and you'll get address info etc. Looking at the form to register an account there is a box for "Company name" but it ISN'T a "required field" so I don't see any block to you ordering as an individual. You might get the number from directory enquiries, the address from the web site is Kilnlinings 53 Ennerdale close Dronfield Derbyshire S18 8PL but a quick google gave a mobile 07958-615187 .....and presumably big order. well - they start with insulation bricks at 29p each .... cheers / Dave Edited By Dave Martin on 20/12/2011 15:46:28 |
