The post on Vertex tables prompted me to post this calculator.
It allows you to enter the number of divisions and the number of degrees covered.
Cheers

343 forum posts 36 photos | John, the second link you posted was just blocked by my Avast antivirus programme as going to a malicious website! I thought it was my browser phishing filter initially! just rechecked. Can't copy and paste the details, but the reason given was: 'Infection: AL' John Infection DetailsEdited By RJW on 14/12/2011 08:45:49 |

343 forum posts 36 photos | Or perhaps it's MS Security Essentials not picking up malicious code!
Avast updates it's signature files hourly, MS.SE doesn't as far as I know.
Better someone checks this out than have someone download a virus or trojan unwittingly, not everyone uses an up to date browser, or even anti-virus software.
Better to be safe than sorry!
John As an edit, the web url is stated as 199.91.153.117 which is Mediafire in Spring, USA, Googling that url throws up Torrent sites which, amongst other things, are used for warez hookey software and porn etc. So far, Avast has chucked the link out on all my browsers, incluidng IE9, and Comodo Dragon. 343 forum posts 36 photos | John, your first link is for a direct download for a zipped file, which scans clear of infections, The second link appears to go directly to a web site, should this link have been directed to an updated zip file for download too, because if so, your link may have been corrupted somehow. ![]() 1885 forum posts 111 photos | I downloaded the file from the second link and sent it here http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and here http://www.virustotal.com/ with nothing of any concern being found.
The file is working OK on my system and Microsoft Security Essentials is up to date as of this morning.

![]() 1377 forum posts 133 photos | Hi All
Mediafire informs me that the first rotary table calculator file has been downloaded 115 times and the second file 159 time as of now. So most users have no problem at all or there would be many posts here.
I also have a paid virus checker subscription and the system is updated daily using NOD32
There are no problems with the computer. The problem is Excel files can contain macros although I have not used them in the calculator files. Some virus checkers are unable to properly decipher excel files. I have to zip them because windows mail will not accept an unzipped Excel file if the security settings have been set up..
I could have written the tool in Visual basic. That would have really got the virus checkers in a knot. They hate code.
Mediafire is a file hosting site. I pay 8 dollars a month so the files are left permanently there. I do this because there are many interested experimenters out there in the aether...I am just about to hit 4000 files downloaded all on engineering. The net is a great way to share information. As mentioned previously Mediafire reports statistics on files downloaded (No it does not report personal IP addresses) It just tells me the number of downloads the country and domain. Just about every country has downloaded a file. it is very rewarding to share.
Cheers
John.

![]() 23121 forum posts 1360 photos | For those who might be worried; Here is a very straightforward explanation of the problem: http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=55343
Mediafire is basically a P2P (peer to peer) file shareing program - As such the content will be always totally unknown to you - There will always be an opening on these programs for infections to be placed in there without anybody knowing -
Basically; John McNamara is a thoroughly decent chap, who shares clean files via Mediafire. ... But there may others who use Mediafire with ulterior motives. Your AntiVirus is warning you about the inherrent risks associated with P2P file sharing. MichaelG. |

377 forum posts | Thanks John M, I too have no problems downloading your spreadsheet using Linux without any AV products or win with NOD32 which is often updated several times per day. Perhaps RJW has been the victim of false positives which are pretty common on some AV products, a right pain in the works, people think the AV has saved them from something nasty so the AV is working well !!!!! Spreadsheet is a good un John, well done. Billy. |

343 forum posts 36 photos | Thanks for the link MichaelG, For those not bothered about visiting the link Michael posted, you may also be interested in the remainder of the text that Michael had omitted! Quote: If you choose to use this program chances are you will soon end up with some type of infection -
If you do not care about that there is always a way around this -FAQ area said: How can I add an IP so it won't be detected and can access a site I need to? Visit the site and incur an IP block. Then right-click on the Malwarebytes system-tray icon after the block notification appears, and choose Add to Ignore List.
The choice is yours (like Limewire music site etc.) that you have access but you have upped your risk of infections - End of Quote! I should make my own postition clear that in no way would I suggest that John.M was in any way doing something that may compromise the saftey of our pc's, but the people running that site may have other ideas! 'Drive by' trojans have been the scourge of the internet for a long time now, and people with inadequate AV and anti-malware protection constantly get hammered, and we then get hammered in turn because their Email address books are used to prolifferarte spam and virus laden messages. P2P sites also use the very computers accessing those sites to transfer files between other pc's, which is how P2P (peer to peer) file transfewrs work, so there is always the possibility (probability?) of a P2P site attempting to download code onto a user's pc to make that happen. What I'm curious about, is why the first link opened my file download box, where the second tried to open a webpage - which made my AV program throw a wobbly! I also clicked on a link direct to Mediashare,s warez site, and that actually opened ok, whereas the second link under discussion, which is an extension of the very same site url won't, it's still blocked by my AV. I take on board what some posters have said about their AV's not blocking it, so be it, . Macro's in Emails and office doccuments have been known hazards for long enough and are often blocked by default until a user clears them, maybe my AV picked up some macro inserts or didn't like that file for some reason, but it didn't block the same P2P site hosting that file, only that file download! My apologies for creating something of a kerfuffle following your hard work John, but in these days of rabid web criminallity which is costing every nation and it's population billions every year, none of us can ever take anything for granted. If you're ever unfortunate enough to have your pc trashed by a trojan - even when using a fully paid up top notch hourly updated internet security programme, trust me, you'll be mega cautious too! 377 forum posts | John, there is a total answer to the risks of infection by zero day threats or other exploits which can trash a Windows machine in seconds. Linux. It also happens to be free. Billy. |
Geir | 14/12/2011 16:37:37 |
17 forum posts 1 photos | As far as I know Mediafire is a hosting service with its own servers and not a P2P network. There is no reason to suspect that a file hosted there in any way will "get infected" by a virus. If the person uploading the file provides a clean file it will stay clean for the people downloading the file. That said, one should always be cautious when downloading files from any source, especially unmoderated filesharing services like Mediafire.
