I often purchase from Metal Supermarket. There is one locally in Leeds, but I think your nearest would be Southampton.
Worth a look on the web as they are very helpfull.

1723 forum posts | Oft forgotten but worth a scan, get yer local copy of Thompsons and look for Fabrications and Engineering shops in the area and ask if you can go "Skip Surfing" Local Industrial type scrapyards are good too but you need to set up a repartee with operators, and DON'T go in a suit.
Regards Ian.

2 forum posts | You could try EKP Supplies in Barnstable, I've used them for all kinds of engineering supplies including metal. They are prompt and reasonably priced.
Their catalogue is online at www.ekp.supplies.btinternet.co.uk

1023 forum posts 30 photos | Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replys - I will follow them up.
A question for keithmart really - the Metal Supermarket, is that a place where you can browse around to find what you need, or has it just a counter where you are supposed to know what you require, like a builders merchants trade counter where you are invariably left feeling inadequate trying to describe what you want without knowing the trade names!
Regards, Chris
PS. Am impressed how this website is moving on in only the few days I have been logging on................... |

It Depends, I tend to have a fair idea of what I want, most of the time
But if you ask for say "I need some steel to turn in a lathe" they will usually find something suitable.

104 forum posts | My local Metal Supermarket lets me browse and then tells me whether I have picked the correct metal or not! Only drawback is that they have a £10 minimum order which for a typical Scot is an awful lot of money. |

Thanks, I was trying to avoid postage charges if there was somewhere local that I could use if out and about.

1017 forum posts 14 photos | Chris - H I live in Kings Stag up near Sturminster. I bought 220M07 free cutting mild from Pulham Steels.
There is also Dyfed Steels up in Shaftesbury.
If you e-mail me we could put an order together - if they want to sell in 3 meter standard lengths.
Somdor engineering on the Henstridge Trading Estate have a very healthy scrap bin. A Mr Ford owns it and is very helpful to model engineers. (Rolled the smokebox for my TE perfectly and for peanuts. Welded up a tuned pipe manifold in ali for a model aircraft ) They don't have much freecutting mild, but could help with more normal engineering grades, especialy in bigger sections/dias/ |

I have obtained brass and aluminium from a couple of non-ferrous scrapyards in Attercliffe, Sheffield. I can't remember their names, but the Yellow Pages should show them.

Geoff

They sell ferrous as well as non-ferrous and are usually even more helpful to personal callers with cash!

1017 forum posts 14 photos | Yes but...... some of these prices people are advertising you'd be better off buying the full 3 metres of a free cutting mild like 220M03/EN1A , cutting off the couple of foot you want and chucking the rest away!
Slightly different with non ferrous.
Incidentally there is a big metal wholesalers in Bristol if anyone wanted to do the Yellow Pages thing. They are supplying a lot of retailers in the SW. They only sell in 3m lengths, but that would not be a problem for a club or something to put an order in. They certainly do 220M03 in imperial sizes, as well as the standard engineering grades. |
