Thread: MT2 collet slipping
07/02/2011 09:48:38
Can you clarify whether slippage is at the MT2 taper or is it the end mill slipping in the collet?
Thread: help with seeing

You could look at:

https://www.glassesuk.co.uk/acatalog/index.html

They do prescription safety specs: single vision, bifocal and varifocal

I have a pair with plain lens and flip down close lens which works well, giving full field a view. Down side they are a bit heavy and top heavy with lens flipped up!

Amazing to think that 50+ years ago one of the workshop projects at prep school was to make and fire a miniature canon(bout 6'' long). Now we hardly dare speak of such things...

I bought some from http://www.safetyspecs.co.uk. Great advantage for me was a pair that have plain lenses and a flip up/down reading lens. Work really well as long as you do not need long lenses aswell. Only drawback is increased weight on the nose(like clip on sunglasses)and cost at about £80.

Using a large font is not shouting, but using capital letters/upper case is.

Entries are much more readable if typed in upper and lower case, a space is added after a full stop and an extra line added between paragraphs. Good old fashioned punctuation is nice aswell!

There is an anti corrosion product caled ACF-50 which many motorcyclists etc swear by. See:

www.acf-50.co.uk/

It is available on ebay at around £14.

I use a portable gas heater in my garage workshop - just have it on while i'm playing and have had no problem with condensation/rust. I assume the air volume is relevant, also a large metal garage door makes a good 'condenser' and I assume sweats first! Also this heater only provides local, mainly radiant, heat and probably has little effect on overall garage temperature.

Thread: Rear mounting parting-off tools

If you put lathe in reverse and turn parting tool the other way up, does this have the same effect as rear mounting? Seems the geometry would be the same!

Right or wrong, should I (lightly) oil/grease the taper before fitting?

As a newbie I thought this a 'good idea'...

I am rearranging my workshop(new mill coming so space has to be 'created').

I would like to be able to position my lathe in such a way that it can be easily moved out of the way should the need arise(it's a garage workshop and other 'machinery' needs access at different times.

The lathe - a Chester Comet -  is on its own stand and could be mounted on castors, but I feel this would lead to stability problems and so on...What I need is some sort of wheel arrangement that could be screwed down to the floor when needed and then retracted.

Anyone have any suggestions? I doubt it is a unique problem!

Where will I find this series?  Is it on the website or in one of the mags? I have a 10V kit and would welcome the guidance...

Thread: Lathe height?
02/07/2009 17:59:51
Having recently aquired a Chester Comet with reccommended stand, I am surprised to find the working height of the lathe is only 1metre(spindle height).
This seems a little low to me(I am 5'7'').

Are there any reccommendations for the correct height?

Can anyone suggest a good online supplier of nuts and bolts. I often seem to need just a few of one size and don't want to buy in quantity.
www.ebolt.co.uk are good for stainless. I need someone similar for HT etc!
