Pinstriping Tool in MEW

Long ago there was an article on making a Beugler pinstripe lookalike published in MEW.

If anybody knows which issue it would save a lot of looking through on my part.

More importantly, has anybody made one and did it work and was it worth the effort?

Failing that has anybody got any foolproof methods of putting 1/4" lines on a stlightly over half size steam lorry. I have been fooling around with a lining brush for a while and we just don't seem to be getting along. It's not her it's me.

Just found it Issue 155 by Dave Fenner.

Still interested to know if anybody other than Dave has made one and how you got on lining.

If you know someone with a vinyl cutter you could get some circles cut, then cutting those up, taking off the bit you'd usually leave, and masking tape you should be able to build up a stencil on the job. Or cheat big time and just use vinyl!

When I did the striping on my engine, I made one of the pens as shown in the above video but did not have a lot of success with it. I used proper sign writers paint but found that the paint would continue to flow thru the nib and cause a blob, especially on wider lines.   I then bought a Beugler roller and recommend them.

As a wrinkly ex Draughty, these used to be called 'UNO' stencil pens when Pounce and Indian ink were kings.

One way out would be to buy the beugler roller of the size you need and make the paint holder ? Noel.

Search for the tapes that car painters use, they are availble for various widths and you can curve some of them. As they are tight to the surface bleeding under is not a problem.

I agree with KWIL’s advice. I have had success with J Tape and 3 M tape. Both can be used to apply multi coloured parallel lines . Avoid the budget tapes however as much more difficult to achieve sharp edges.

To Paul L and Dalboy for links to the UNO lookalike as Circlip notes. Like Circlip I remember the UNO from Drawing Office days and have a fair selection of them in the back of the drawer still. I have tried them on paint and the results were not great, probably need more clearance to function on paint. To be fair, they weren't great on ink either - the Rotring was like waking from a nightmare!

Anyway, the real problem is that I need to do 1/4" lines and while twin lines with a UNO and fill in the gap with a brush is possible it is very slow. Some of my 4" Burrell was done that way with a draughtsman's pen rather than a UNO.

Thanks to KWIL and Paul R for the experience on lining tapes. I might go that route as I do have some curves to do.

I went down the scrap mine last night to see if a Dave Fenner pen might appear and I have found some scrapium that might be suitable.

However, there is a more interesting possibility as a result of this thread, which I will tell you about if it comes to fruition.
