Hi all

Undecided on what machine to go for. I have a small clapped out warco mill which needs replacing, however, looking around I see that most of them from differing suppliers are pretty much the same machine apart from a paint job !

I dont mind spending a few quid but Id rather not buy the 'same' machine as I have now, after all, theyre all probably made in the same place.

Im looking for compact desk version rather than a free standing. Any ideas other than Chester, Axminster or Warco ?

Ta all

C

Not that many manufactures but lots of brands! Most of the Warco, Chester, Amadeal, SPG are variations on a theme made by Weiss. The other manufacturers are Sieg (Arc, Axminster) and Some of the European manufacturers/finishers like Optimum and Wabeco. If you want Wabeco you need deep pockets. If not one of these then you are looking for good used but these are often ex-industrial and a bit larger. (Further thoughts on milling machines *** HERE ***)

Have a look at Sieg bench top Mills. Personally I believe they're a step above Warco offerings in terms of quality. Have seen both being manufactured in China in their respective factories.

The Sieg SX3.5ZP is a nice milling machine with a motor to lift the head and with powerfeed. If I didn't already have a milling machine from Weiss, the Sieg would be of interest to me. A friend of mine owns a SX3 and is very happy with his.

I went for the SIEG SX3.5ZP in the end. As Martyn says, it does seem to be a notch above the Warco in terms of build quality.

An excellent choice for a benchtop, with a higher than average spec.

An excellent choice for a benchtop, with a higher than average spec.

But your benchtop looks a bit flimsy and may vibrate. If you pull it forward to give your knuckle some respite on that Y axis handle you will keep knocking it. So I suggest finding a heavy (council spec) 3x2 paving slab to raise it up and give you a solid base.

Yes. Im going to put it on some risers and bolt through. The bench is solid enough I think. Its on 20mm ply on top of a hard wood top of around 15mm. The bench is then fixed to batons along the shed. Its not super unmovable but good enough for me I recon.

Very nice. They have a good spec too. Congrats.
