Myford ml7 Chuck

Good morning,

I’m new to this forum and new to model lathes! This has probably been asked a load of times so apologies in advance!

The Chuck on my ml7 has seen better days! Could anybody recommend a good 3 Jaw chick with backplate, that I could bolt straight on without having to machine anything??

I don’t think my machining skills will be quite up to it just yet 😀

I believe it has the 3 jaw 100ml Chuck fitted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It really depends on what quality you want, it ranges from cheap and nasty far east products to high end stuff like Bison and others.

If it were me, I would buy a 4" Chinese chuck and a matching backplate from Arc Eurotrade. I purchased such a chuck about a year ago and was amazed at how good the quality was, forgetting the modest price. Arc do backplates but you will need to turn the register to size and drill the mounting holes. Not a difficult task and good learning too.

You may be able to buy a chuck with a backplate attached and ready to go, from the" New" Myford. If so it will probably be more expensive than going the Arc route and the chuck will be hard pressed to beat the Arc offering.

I’ve seen the Chinese built chucks but dubious about the quality!
End of the day, can’t be any worse than what I’ve got now 😂.

Anything that Arc sell will be a quality product. The 4" Chinese chuck that they sell can be bought more cheaply on Ebay, but the quality is going to be poorer than the Arc version. Chinese companies sell the same product in different qualities, depending on what the buying company wants to pay and what quality they want.

Arc has an exemplary reputation for excellent goods at reasonable prices. You can depend on the quality of their Chinese chucks. If in the highly unlikely event of a problem, you can depend on them to rectify it PDQ.

If you buy, cheap off E bay, you will not be sure of the quality, nor, if there is a problem will you get any help.

You get what you pay for!

If you buy from Arc, you will get sound advice, and help if there is any problem, or query.

Do not be tempted to fit an oversized chuck. Too heavy a chuck will cause extra wear to the bearings,

If you can find a chuck with a backplate to suit a Myford 7 Series, well and good. Otherwise you will need to do some machining.

You can buy a backplate to suit a Myford thread and register, but you will need to turn the OD to match the register in the chuck, drill the holes for the retaining screws (Which in all probability will be Metric ) and skim the face to ensure that it is square to the axis of your lathe.

This might be the more accurate way to do things, but the register diameter needs to be a close fit in the chuck, so don't rush things. Measure twice, cut once!..

Not to mention that there's little advantage to an oversized chuck since the capacity is limited by the jaws hitting the bed.
