Hello chaps. Well it is moving forward and I appreciate the help and the replys I have gotten here. I have decided not to use the old original 3 phase motor and just get a new 1 phase. But have changed the bearings and refurbished the old motor in case I decide to sell it. Next job is to make the shims to the headstock. Could these be made out of soda cans? Or do I need to buy thin brass shets?img_20210926_181516.jpg

I wouldn't use aluminium (soda cans) for shimming, brass or steel would be better, something like this.

The closest I have found is:

You may have to order from abroad.

The problem with Aluminium shims made from a can is the metal slowly deforms under pressure: the alloy is too soft for a permanent shim.

Mild steel is better but still relatively soft. Steel cans are made from dead mild-steel, which is a fair bit softer than mild steel. Extruded drink cans are always made from a soft metal, and although convenient, they're not ideal for shimming. I use aluminium to shim my 4-way tool post and occasionally put new in due to it flattening in use.

I have no idea whether you would find a local supplier, Tonny ... but this type of material is ideal for shimming split bearings : **LINK**

I have used razor blades for small shim stock - the double edge type, not the ones moulded into plastic.

Another source of good shims are feeler gauges. Dirt cheap and available every where.

I too thought about feeler gauges, but they are not wide enough. Need to be something like this. screenshot_20211003_160807_com.ebay.mobile.jpg

I have used material salvaged from old feeler gauge sets to make shims in the past when I didn’t have the right size shim stock to hand.

edit. Didn’t type fast enough……..

If you can't obtain laminated shim stock, the alternative is to buy shim steel..

Stubs sell it in UK in thicknesses from 0.0015" (0.038 mm) up wards to about 0.0102 (0.254 mm )

Found a shop that sells thin sheets of brass. Just bought some and will give that a go. Thanks for the replys!
