20 forum posts 8 photos | Hello chaps. Well it is moving forward and I appreciate the help and the replys I have gotten here. I have decided not to use the old original 3 phase motor and just get a new 1 phase. But have changed the bearings and refurbished the old motor in case I decide to sell it. Next job is to make the shims to the headstock. Could these be made out of soda cans? Or do I need to buy thin brass shets? |

10668 forum posts 2415 photos | The problem with Aluminium shims made from a can is the metal slowly deforms under pressure: the alloy is too soft for a permanent shim. Mild steel is better but still relatively soft. Steel cans are made from dead mild-steel, which is a fair bit softer than mild steel. Extruded drink cans are always made from a soft metal, and although convenient, they're not ideal for shimming. I use aluminium to shim my 4-way tool post and occasionally put new in due to it flattening in use. Dave |
