Thread: Worth it?
27/04/2023 20:46:19

Good Evening. Just came across this on ebay and did not know that it is still possible to buy new Myfords? 4674 pounds just for lathe without motor or any accessories! Seems like alot of money compared you can get a Warco 250 with VFD for roughly 2700 pounds. I actually have thought of saving up for one though it is alot of money for a basically mini lathe. What are your thoughts? Have Myfords always been this expensive? screenshot_20230427_212107_chrome.jpg

Thread: Choices..Need guidance
20/08/2022 13:21:39

Thanks for all the comments chaps. I have not made my mind up yet so will just continue to use the 4 way tool post for now. But is the wedge style so much superior than the piston, dickson type? Anyway my first project is to make a new idler wheel for the belt tensioner. Noticed it don't make noise on the three lowest speeds, but the three highest it rattles and makes alot of noise. So I changed the bearings, but that did not help. Also it fits loose in the swinging bracket so will make a new one. This time with a nylon locking nut at the back instead of a locking ring and with highest quality bearings. Added a photo on how it looks like.

I feel it is a bit shitty since it is a new lathe, but then again it is chinese so it is a project in it is own I guess. Added the four bolt on the compound slide since the original two bolts were soft and the threads stripped out. Otherwise it seems fine and run true and I dont regret selling the other old lathe I restored since it took up too much space. Though I am a bit jealous of all the nice Myfords and Boxfords I have seem online laugh. Hope my English is good enough since it is not my native language. All the best from Norway.

Photo of the old and new under.

Good Evening chaps. I have sold my old lathe and bought a chinese 10x22 so it is very similar to Warco 250. With it I got the standard 4 way tool post. Have been thinking about these quick change tool posts that everyone seems to buy and it is tempting to buy one. Contacted RDG and they suggested the Myford size T37, but that seems very small? I have come to these options and I am curious which of these option would you go for and why?

1.T51 Boxford size Dixon type QCTP from RDG

2: T37 Myford size Dixon QCTP from RDG

3: 250-111 wedge style QCTP from Arceurotrade

4: Make a couple of 4 way tool posts and keep tools permantent in them and just change the tool post.

Ohh and when in Off position is none contact between any of them

Just checked and it works the same as the one in the youtube video. I have a diagram, but dont understand it. No U, V or W and what pattern, delta or star and the black and red wire must come from the capacitor? I can wire sockets, lamps and easy things, but struggle on this sort of stuff.. screenshot_20220128_183536_com.google.android.youtube_edit_223878438504900.jpgscreenshot_20220128_183615_com.google.android.youtube_edit_223913164733540.jpgscreenshot_20220128_183729_com.google.android.youtube_edit_223896339460105.jpg

Good Afternoon! I have bought a new single phase motor for my Aasbrink. And I have the original drum switch that I want to use, but do anyone have a wire diagram or something similar? I found this on youtube , but I am uncertain since my motor is different connections.

Thread: Shim stock
03/10/2021 17:57:11

Found a shop that sells thin sheets of brass. Just bought some and will give that a go. Thanks for the replys!

I too thought about feeler gauges, but they are not wide enough. Need to be something like this. screenshot_20211003_160807_com.ebay.mobile.jpg

I wouldn't use aluminium (soda cans) for shimming, brass or steel would be better, something like this.

Thor

Do you know anywhere in Norway that sells these kinds of shims stock Thor?

03/10/2021 14:14:33

Hello chaps. Well it is moving forward and I appreciate the help and the replys I have gotten here. I have decided not to use the old original 3 phase motor and just get a new 1 phase. But have changed the bearings and refurbished the old motor in case I decide to sell it. Next job is to make the shims to the headstock. Could these be made out of soda cans? Or do I need to buy thin brass shets?img_20210926_181516.jpg

Thread: Soft floor and lathe...
22/09/2021 23:27:15

Hehehehehehe. I have taken it all apart and repainted and cleaned it. A bit worn, but it works very well. Soon getting it together again and wonder how it will run.

22/09/2021 18:35:40

I just rent the apartment so could not open it up and make a concrete foundation. The floor was a bit better than I thought and is 2x6 beams and 3/4 chipboard. So I made a double layer of dry plank across the beams and across those again. Used plenty of screws and glue so this will have to do for now. Certainly must be better? img_20210922_185453.jpg

No I am not in a garden shed. It is actually in my workshop inside my apartment which is in a basement. The floor is most likely 2x2 timber and sheets of chipboard on top.

21/09/2021 10:21:05

The stand is two heavy cast iron legs and a heavy 8mm u beam on top where the lathe is bolted on.

I did have a Chinese lathe before that came with that flimsy steel plated stand and I saw then how much the floor gave in. And this lathe I now have is at least 50kg heavier.

Hello

I am about to get my South Bend clone back together after getting cleaned and repainted. But I have a problem. The workshop floor is a soft wooden one and I read several places that trying to level a lathe on such flooring will almost be pointless since it flex and moves about. Am I overthinking this? What can be done about it?

I appreciate every reply and help!

Thread: A question about motor
17/09/2021 10:24:48

Thanks chaps for the replys. Will give some thought on that VFD thing.

16/09/2021 18:25:05

Yes I was thinking of buying a single phase motor. How reliable are these VFD? I dont have alot of trust in electronics and if it breaks down, I am not able to fix it.

16/09/2021 15:47:37

Hello

I have just bought a swedish clone of the South Bend 9 lathe and it came with the original 0.5hp 3 phase motor. I have the correct capacitor and runs ok, but will this ruin or burn out the motor? Should I just buy a single phase motor?
