Rather like a giant ‘lantern pinion’ in construction ... but what’s with the gear in the foreground ? [ assuming it is a gear not a water-wheel !! ] MichaelG. 4655 forum posts 304 photos | That large worm wheel is driven by a worm on the donkey engine crankshaft. Did you notice that there were two donkey engines, only one was needed. |

A very, very worn worm wheel.
. That’s what I guessed it must be, Chris ... thanks for the confirmation ... hence my use of the word ‘interesting’ MichaelG. |

7227 forum posts 21 photos | Many years ago, there were two large beam engines at Coleham Head in Shrewsbury, which pumped sewage. 114 and 116 gallons per stroke. usually only one engine was in steam at a time. Normally they ran at about ten strokes a minute. "They will do 16, but shakes the whole building" They were barred over, using a crowbar engaged in the teeth on the 12 feet diameter flywheels. Although no .longer in active service in happier times one was steamed each week as a museum piece.y The WaterWorks Museum in Hereford has the oldest operating triple expansion stationary steam engine in Britain. It used to pump water from the River Wye, so that it eventually reached the water tower which supplied water to the city. Sadly, like The WaterWorks Museum, Coleham Head Pumping Station, it is currently closed, but hopefully, before too long we shall be able to go and visit again. ![]() 23121 forum posts 1360 photos | Thanks for the links, Jason Yes, I get the idea, but the shape of the worm-wheel teeth in Steve’s video was what intrigued me ... As per Chris, last night, I’m happy to believe that they have done some serious work in their time. MichaelG. |
