Help with lathe valuation - First post, be gentle!

Around 7 years ago I worked as a senior engineer for a large company that used a Clarke CL300M for a short and minor operation that only required the use of the chuck. Even then the operation was quite infrequent. The variable speed control started to become problematic, speed would increase decrease but it would jump rather than smoothly ramp up. The manager told me to skip the lathe rather than repair and buy a new one, big German Co. loads of money! Rather than skip it I put it in my car (with his approval) and ordered a new one.

I still have it and have never used it so now I want sell it at under its true value to an enthusiast who will make use of it and won't sell it on for a profit. I bought a new speed control switch from Clarke and fitted it today so it operates perfectly.

My question is - what price should I ask? Proceeds are going to 'Help for heros' charity.

It has a small box of other parts such as gears, little oil bottles etc, all never used, plus another tail stock. It's been covered in WD40 during storage and only shows damage around the speed knob where fingers have rubbed the paint finish on the label plate.

It will need collection, I am in Essex.

Always a tricky question to answer. Look at the offerings on ebay for a guide.

Those are likely to be used of course, yours is close to new condition [now] for an genuine description as such.

I'd ask around half the price of nearest new equivalent and expect it to sell reasonably quickly. Maybe get 2/3 rds of that if its "Exactly what I want and only just up the road.".

Bottom line is its fundamentally an inexpensive machine and folk with a few more pennies in their pocket will be looking more upmarket.

I'm intrigued by the spare tailstock.
Perhaps sell it separately if maximum help for heroes is the aim.

If it's goimg to a yougster just starting on the hobby, give it away (after all it cost you nothing) anyone else who you feel is genuinely going to use it ask them to make you an offer.

I'm inclined to agree with the half the new cost valuation. Just at the moment there is a glut of good workshop machinery going for a song . ML7 for £300 anybody? Plenty more out there in the £400 to £500 range that would have made £700 ten months ago. Ebay with a starting price of £299 and put it on for ten days ending on a Sunday late afternoon and you'll find out what it's worth today. All a sign of the times I'm afraid.
