Carl,

Try Noggin End Metals for a start. I've not used them, myself, but the very name suggests they will fulfil your needs. I seem to remember seeing them at the last Doncaster show, displaying all manner of "useful" bits.

I buy most of my metal from Rapid Metals, they have a couple of places and welcome hobbyists. They used to have bags of off cuts split into type, round, square, stainless etc. Although last time I went they seem to have odd bits on shelves near the till. I am working my way through a bag of round, 16 and 10mm, 150 to 200 mm lengths, that was I think £20, prices vary but they used to be priced at £10 for ferrous.

You should have a look at M machine metals http://www.m-machine-metals.co.uk/ they cut whatever size you need and have a good selection.

Out of curiosity: If you buy off-cuts, have you any idea of the material specification?

I doubt if you could have any idea, unless stated. Otherwise it,s just a bag of bits, a lucky dip?

Rapid metals are doing a complete overhaul of their website, when I looked (last few mins) it was 14 days away and counting !!

So at the moment you can't order via the tinternet sad

The material I buy from Rapid Metals is all marked. Bar ends usually have the original paint codes as when they supply cut blanks to engineering shops they don’t supply the ends, hence offcut. They are happy to cut what you want and have a good supply of ferrous, stainless, aluminium, brass etc.

I’ve recently been buying silver steel from Coventry Grinders *Clicky*

Not really offcuts, but 2 13” lengths of 1/2” delivered was under £14.
Half of that was postage, so I normally buy a few lengths, but I needed this for a part for work.
